Is there a timetable or timeline as to when SMF 2.0 will be released?  Has it been mentioned before and I just can't seem to find it?  I'm wanting to try it, but I'm not a Charter member.

Gary

We dont like to set deadlines, so we believe in a "it'll be released when it's ready" kind of deal.

If you do want to try it already, then you can become a charter member quite easily. ;)

It's been nearly a year since 2.0 was first revealed. It been many months since the first beta was released. We haven't got to the first release candidates and even those aren't advised to be used in production environment, though many of us do. It also means there aren't many mods or themes for them.

Judging from 1.1, I would guess we are a good 6 months from a public RC and probably 18 months from a new release. I'd really have no problem going for a charter membership if I had some idea of when 2.0 would be going public. I love SMF, but I have a new project coming down in April and I need a good piece of forum software forit.

I am now testing phpbb 3.0 to see if it can fit my needs, but I am really looking at VBulletin. But my first choice is SMF. SMF 1.1.4 doesn't have the features I want, SMF 2.0 does. Do I wait for 2.0 to be released to charter members in a stable form or go with either of two options that do currently?

i am kinda curious on why you are wanting it to rush through che1959, I am sure you would rather us not go through loads of RC's but rather get as many bugs fixed as possible, now as for your project why does smf 1,1,4 not meet your needs?

While the development of 2.0 may seem slow up to this moment, the development is making an effort to shorten the time between releases of betas and RCs.

We would like to do some quick turn around for RCs after Beta 2.  As such we are putting a feature freeze on 2.0.  But knowing us I'm sure small features will still be snuck in.  While we won't be looking to add new features to 2.0 we will of course be taking feedback on how to improve the features that are already in.

But in the end, 2.0 Beta 3 will come out when it is deemed to be ready enough. If we can make Beta 3 quite stable for a beta, I feel we may not have to go through many RC releases until final comes out.

Personally i think its actually quite stable for a beta.

For most of us with access to beta 2 I think its the lack of mods/themes that are 1.1.x forums use, rather than the stableness of the software.

Eg for me.  SMF Arcade is a mod I can't do without.

Gary

When I was considering on upgrading the compatibilty of mods was something I was worried about, but then I just thought "Screw it" and upgraded anyway. :P I laughed at how incompatible my theme was in 2.0 at the time (August 2006) and the upgrading of themes hadnt been implemented yet.

But thats me at this point, I dont recommend doing that. :P

The big plus I see is being able to moderate posts before they appear. There are a few other features as well. I am using 1.1.4 on a few boards now and I like, in fact I love it. In fact, I would love to find a complete rundown of the features in 2.0, but I haven't found any. It might be that 2.0 could fit the bill.

Now, about the stability, if I am reading between the lines right, there are some bugs, but it's stable enough? I was running 1.1 RC1 in a production environment with no problems.

Of course I don't want the team to rush things out, but it would be nice to get some sort of a rough time schedule. Deadlines can make you rush, but they also help you focus towards a goal.

To tell you the truth, there is a version of arcade out there for 2.0 :P

And as you said, deadlines can make you rush, now if they rush, they might miss things which may be small or may be heavy.

The public beta will be out soon. There are still some must fix bugs for the next beta - once they are dealt with we shall release.
I'm only a half geek really...

Looking forward to a public beta.
