SMF does NOT host any forums.
SMF merely provides the software.

Unless the Simple Machines license has been broken (eg removal of smf copyright) there is nothing that SMF can do. [Which it hasn't]

You may be able to trace the 'actual' host of the software by doing a whois lookup at http://dnsstuff.com/ and complain to them (as they are the only ones who can do anything)

What so your saying that the site which provids other sites cant do anything about them spamming other site?
Thats stupid whats the point in letting people have sites for them to do what they like with them  >:(

karlbenson

We don't provide the site. They just use our software. We do not host their forums and therefore have NO control over how they use it.

Complaining to the 'actual' host of the site is the only thing you can do. (We are not it!)

jojoandkyle

RIGHT
Well thats a load of **** as its the site owner spamming my site!!
I would do it back but unfortunatly my site is based on rules and would get shut down if i did it thats what sites are ment to be like

karlbenson

They may be the site owner. But someone will be hosting their forum.
If you check using the link I posted in my first post, you will be able to discover who the actual host is.

It will also give information about the site owner.

It is known as a WhoIs Record

As Karl has stated,

Simple Machines, LLC does not offer hosting services, or any services which one run a board off of.  We are software developers who create the message board software.  We do not and can not legally impose control on the usage of our software.

While it certainly doesn't make us happy that others choose to use the software in such a manner, there is neither legally nor technically anything we can do about it.

Karl's link will point you in the right direction to find their hosting company and contact them of their illicit activity

Another way to put this, in terms of simplicity...

If someone was hacking your own desktop, you wouldn't write to Microsoft complaining about that person.  Microsoft only makes the software avialable to each person.  What each person does with that software is up to them and ultimately the end user's responsibility, not Microsoft.  The same pricinple applies here with SMF.  :)

Run a whois lookup on the site to get the actual owner and host

I actually recommend using Netcraft's search page to look up information. They include information on the owner of the domain, the host for that site, etc. Much more information than a simple WHOIS query.

Also, DNSStuff is now a paid service (after so many queries it refuses to do anything until you pay for the service).

Also, a good analogy: Simple Machines is like a paper company. We provide paper (Simple Machines Forum / SMF) for people to use and put stuff on. People take our paper and use it as they wish. It could be the next great novel or misogynistic crud. As long as they don't try to claim they made the paper (remove our copyright), we have no control over what they do with it. The only websites where we have control of the contents are those that end with "simplemachines.org" in the domain.
