im looking for a way to connect the 2 packages together, that allows cool things like

- one user name for both packages

- same banner and buttons from Joomla to integrate into SMF

Kinda similar to how the SMF pages work now.

Kindred

not any more.

there WAS a bridge for Joomla-SMF. it has been discontinued and, even if you tracked down a copy, it does not work with the new Joomla (1.5) nor with the new SMF (2.0).

If you like the joomla setup, I suggest Mambo.
Otherwise, there are bridges for E107 and XOOPs as well...

I had a look at it when I first saw it.  The code is good and sound.  The licensing environment is precarious, but that's the developer's choice.

I had tested J2SMF bridge, it can wrap SMF inside Joomla!, but has no user synchronization.

problem is i am using many joomla extension addons and i dun suppose mambo supports such addons and they don't have a comprehensive library of extensions for us to use..

Most Joomla 1.0.x extensions still work on Mambo 4.6.x (they obviously won't have features related to Mambo 4.6's advances).  You can also find extensions here:

I will NEVER switch to mambo in order to bridge SMF. When time goes, things will change. I believe there will be a perfect solution to integrate Joomla! with SMF later.

Why you always persuade users to move to Mambo, while the Joomla! team try to persuade us to turn to phpBB3 ?

How difficult is it to solve the co-operation issue between these two free software, Joomla! and SMF ?

i agree.. we have been using joomla and smf for years.. there are features that can't be offered by other applications.. not saying that mamba or phpBB3 is no good.. just that its a question of getting used to the features of each software.. so i will still choose to wait for a perfect solution to bridge joomla and smf too..

I am not trying to persuade anyone...

People ask "what can I do to get my SMF integrated with Joomla.?"
The answer, at the moment, is nothing.
However, since Mambo is still mostly he same as Joomla, you can easily switch to mambo if you want the same look/feel and you want to keep SMF.

On this site, we assume that people want to keep SMF. So, the answer is... switch to mambo (or one of the other CMS programs).

If you feel that Joomla is the important part of your site, then, by all means, use phpbb or joomlaboard.

ya i understand your point of view.. but as the title of this thread suggests.. we are discussing how we could keep both and integrate them nicely.. hoping for a solution to use both of them.. switching software should not be part of the solution as it does not fit the criteria of the thread anymore..

not trying to say ur solution is no good.. there are pple who have switched.. either to mambo or other forum systems.. but the main purpose of this thread is to discuss the possibility of simply keeping both.. for the small group of pple who still prefer to use them both..

Kindred

well, at this point, unless you hire a coder to do the integration just for you (no distribution =  no license issues)... it is unlikely that you will find a full integration between the two systems.

With the mambo dev team recently walking away and starting thier own CMS Fork ( again ) ... a bridge with mambo, given its situation is "iffy" to build a site at this point  .................

I had to go through this awhile back myself,, and giving up on joomla was difficult,,, but my opinion is,,, it was the right choice...

SMF is a must and from what I see in its dev its on the right path,, development is tight and solid,,, along with mods like Felblog and ultimate profile and gallery pro and Tiny Portal and a little understanding of the code there is nothing you cant do and after awhile a bridge to joomla is almost restricting and you will wonder why you even needed it... but thats just my opinion
