I haven't installed any mods. I think the theme has this function. but i don't know how i can enable it.

Did you try this in the default theme to see if the online users area is working properly? If it's ok, then I suggest asking this in that theme's support topic. Go to where you downloaded the theme. That page should have a support/comment button for you to click on.
