Mambo and SMF database

Do they have to be in the same database in order for the bridge to work? Or can they be on different databases?

You can use different databases, but you are best using the same database username and password for both. 

At the very least, you will have to make sure that the SMF database user has access to the Mambo database, and vice versa.
