is mambo as integrated as mkportal?

Hmm, tough question.  Mkportal has more "ready made" out of the box integrations (avatar, login, profile, new posts, new replies etc) - but I think all of these can be done in Mambo through SSI or other customizations.

interesting. i installed both today and mambo just felt so separated from my forum while mkportal seemed to be closer. both of them would require quite a bit of work to properly theme to work with the forum. it seems mambo is easier to modify, but mkportal already has stuff like shoutbox and galleries in place. i think i might go forward with mkportal and see how that goes. mambo really just felt like a completely different website to me. maybe i'm overestimating the amount of work it will take to integrate mambo into the forum. what's your experience in this regard?

Oh Yes, I think there is a much steeper learning curve with Mambo and that it will take more work to learn and integrate... not sure 'integrate' is the right word, because what many of us want to do is to use Mambo (or some other CMS or portal) to make a "super" forum.  I've just started with Mambo, have picked a basic template, have done my colors and fonts only -  but I'm in no hurry.

I think there is a need for a relatively simple integrated portal like MKPortal.  Lots of nice things about MKPortal (I really like the ability to collapse both left and right columns) The out of the box integrations are very nice. .. so I encourage to set it up and play with it.  One of the disadvantages of this plug and play integration is that layout will look the much the same with MKportal sites.  As i mentioned above, my test users and I have had some login/logout problems.   I've been unable to get SSI to work within the blocks. A few other minor things like the html editor being in Italian (still pretty easy to figure outtheough).

I'm not putting down MKPortal, becasue I really like it, but Mambo is a powerful open source CMS that stands alone and as someone mentioned in another thread it is kind of a strange marriage between Mambo and SMF.... there is quite a bit of overlapping functionality and you have to make choices.  The user community is huge... so the availability of third party modules is greater and the support much broader.   Many different ready made template layouts are available.  So I think the chances of running into a dead end with Mambo are considerably less - and that's why I think there is much more interest in it than something like MKPortal.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,

Well I gave a brief description of how mine is coming along at this post.  Let me quote it here.

Mine is a bit more integrated then SSI would allow, mine is embedding itself, becoming part of the forum software.  I've worked on it a bit more, working on some new techs for it, finished the module system client side (and one last page to work on in the admincp), and completely integrated.  Even new modules will have a place in the membergroup's permissions on the actual permission's page.  It is using a default theme only, everything you see, any other theme you load is just setting css things for it, and it works well.  Although a real theme for it in Helios would look far better then the css is allowing (*hint* *hint*).  The template is a single file and supports overriding default module themes inside it to allow someone to create a theme that even changes any known module, whether they load it or not, without interference.   If you want to see the latest demo it is located at my site here.  It is not at root, mkportal is currently installed there, but will probobly be uninstalling it quite soon, its admincp is so limiting compared to SMF's.  Nice thing about my portal, it is completely integrated into the forum, you could load it by doing a specific action, or using an external wrapper I made (as demonstrated by the link above).  Its coming out well, and as allways, comments, suggestions, whatever, are welcome on my forum.

Does this sound like something you are talking about?  The exact problems you described (not to mention mkportals appalling permission setup), and the lack of something like this, is the reason I started making this one at all.  And before you claim copying, I had the sliding side things before mkportal ever came to smf (or I ever heard of it for that matter), I copied it from the SMF header.  Although the code I use for it is now far more advanced. :P

Here is the site I've toyed with since I started use'n mkPortal.  It is my first attempt with their template and I am now working to make it work so that it will work like the template that gets css from the forum.   I have tried almost every portal posted here but currently this is my favorite due to the simplicity.  I do not need something complicated or very powerfull.

There is still more I plan to do.  But I am very happy with it so far.  I need to fix the top border of the middle column, and then I plan to modify the left column and do away with the text links and icons.  After that I will probably modify the reviews section that I use for a roster to more fit our needs.

One thing to keep in mind that this is 0.3 of the portal.  Long way to go before 1.0 and many things can change along the way.

Springer, I notice your running MKPortal with SMF 1.0 on that site. Could you please check the error log in the forum admin center and see if it's loaded with errors? I just upgraded to SMF 1.0 and I had to remove MKPortal and revert back to my old site because I had over 60 pages of errors! :o

I made sure I compared the obExit function of RC2 to 1.0 and I found that it was exactly the same except for a typo fix in one of the comments, so I don't think that can be the problem.

Perhaps other user functions/values - which MKPortal gets for it own - has changed.

I will try it out too.

Springer

It does.  I posted last night on the mkportal site to let them know.  For now I use the forum outisde the portal and I get an error or two over several hour period.  DOes not seem to effect any functionality but better safe than sorry.

Meo works very fast so I'm sure what ever it is will be addressed soon.

The Man in Blak

Hi,

I tried downloading the SMF/MKPortal bridge code from the URL listed earlier in this thread (hxxp:smf.mkportal.it/ [nonactive]) but it appears that the site is down now, as I'm getting the test page for the Apache HTTP server.  Is there a new or updated link for this bridge code out there?

Thanks!

Wolfenrook

That URL does not exist.  MKPortal (M1 for 1.0.7 and M1.1 RC1 for SMF1.1RC2) is available from http://www.mkportal.it and comes with everything you need to get it installed and running.  It doesn't use a seperate bridge.

Thoughts are free, it's their consequences that often have a cost.

You can only download it from mkportal.it  . To get the file from the site you need to click the activation link from mkportal which is coming from site after registration. Sometimes mail goes the bulk/junk mail folder. Find it and click the link
