Is it worth upgrading to the new RC release?

Can anybody tell me if it's worth upgrading from 1.1.9 to the latest 2.0 RC version as I've noticed that there are quite a few Mods available which I am interested in and which are compatible with said RC release but which aren't compatible with the 1.1.9 release.

QuoteNote: As this is in early beta we do not suggest running SMF 2.0 RC1.1 on a production site.

I suggest to use lastest finall version and that is 1.1.9 for now...
You can contact mod author for more info abour compatible versions, and for further request or supoort about it....

ShadoWind

I guess you're right and just stick with 1.1.9 for now... Fortunately, there only seems to be a few Mods that I need to email the authors about concerning updating them for 1.1.9

I think upgrading to RC 1-1 would be absolutely fine :) There are a bunch of forums already running it including ours and the release is pretty stable.

I might look at doing a test version using RC 1-1 and see how that goes before committing as I don't want to launch my forum until everything's absolutely perfect.

N3RVE

Indeed, that would be wise. Grab a copy of your existing database, import unto your local and use the 2.0 Rc1 Large Upgrade Package.

I installed a test forum to install the RC release and I did what [n3rve] suggested and I ended up getting the following message even though I followed the instructions to the letter:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/2.2.11 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.8j DAV/2 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at www.asianami.com Port 80

Can anyone tell me if I've done anything wrong and how I can fix it?

The '500' is a generic error message, given when no more specific message is suitable, the server cannot be more specific about the error condition in it's response back to the client, however, an error detailing the cause of the 500 error is generated in the Server error log. It's up to the Web Server Operator to view and analyze the logs that would give more information about the problem.

I've checked the error log and found this:
[Mon Jul 06 01:43:24 2009] [error] [client 90.218.161.88] File does not exist: /home/leikaman/public_html/500.shtml

What do I do next as I uploaded the files again over the originals in the test-forum.

That error was because of this:
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
You don't have a 500 error page, so that showed up

Also, i don't think an internal server error (500) is related to the forum software, but a compatibility issue on your server or something. check to make sure that the php and mysql is up to date

So if the php and mysql aren't to date, this could cause the problem concerned?

On another note; I have a seperate problem concerning upgrading:

I got this message when using the upgrade.php file:

Updating Your SMF Install!
The upgrader found some old or outdated language files, for the forum default language, english-utf8.

Please make certain you uploaded the new versions of all the files included in the package, even the theme and language files for the default theme.
   [SKIP] [Try English]

As far as I know, all the files were copied over properly by FTP so why should I get this message?

septa/njt rider

try re-uploading the files again, maybe one was missed, and outdated php/mysql could be causing those 500 errors. (that's why i had to switch hosts like 40 times lol)

Internal Server Error 500 is usually caused by an invalid directive, this could be any application including PHP which SMF uses.

Quote[Mon Jul 06 01:43:24 2009] [error] [client 90.218.161.88] File does not exist: /home/leikaman/public_html/500.shtml
Indeed, it was looking for a 500.shtml to return to the browser which, unfortunately, it didn't find, thus the error.
Is this the same server the other SMF installation runs on? I'll like to see a phpinfo().php sheet (What is phpinfo.php?).

Okay, I'm in doubt but it seems the Upgrade package doesn't contain English-UTF8 language files. Your SMF installation has it's default language set to English-UTF8, this has made the Upgrade script search for updated language files of English-UTF8 and it's only finding those that were left over from the 1.1.x Installation. To fix this, you can either download a copy of the English-UTF8 language pack for 2.0 and extract it's content to ./Themes/default/languages to replace the language files there.

Alternatively, download Settings.php, open up the file in a reliable text editor (notepad++ recommended), Find the $language variable (line 34), it should have 'english-utf8', replace with 'english' (remove the '-utf8'), save and upload (overwrite) the file on the server. This will enable the upgrade script pass that stage. If you're not comfortable opening the files, see the repair_settings.php script. (What is repair_settings.php?).

Both the original forum and the test forum run on the same server as far as I know.

I've tried your advice to edit the settings.php file, I FTPed it to the relevant forum and I'm still getting the same error...

I've enclosed a copy of the file if you need to check it out.

The link for phpinfo.php at my site is here

Is it worth using the repair settings file or should I not use it at all?

N3RVE

Can you send me cPanel info to look into the issue?
