Migrating topics to a new install

Okay, not as simple a question as it may seem. Here is the deal.

I did a clean install of SMF 2.0 RC2 on another part of my site. I wanted a clean slate design wise and planned on moving topics over later. During the design portion I created a slew of new boards and child boards and though to myself that I would take this opportunity to create a more dynamic forum.

Well, job well done and people are loving it but I now have no way to get the 10,000 posts from my old forum over to the new one. Board ID's are totally different and some categories do not even exist anymore.

I do not want to copy and paste them all because I was able to import the member list and I do not want to claim credit for their posts. I realize I can copy and paste and then edit the DB to give the original poster credit but well, 10,000 posts would be a LONG time spent editing my DB.

Am I SOL on this or is there a trick I am missing?

What you could've done is a clean install of RC2, and if the database structure is the same (meaning you are importing a database from an old version of SMF 2.0) then just import all the important stuff (attachments, boards, messages, topics, members, etc) and everything should've clicked in place. Then running upgrade.php to make sure everything was upgraded properly. Then you would go ahead and add the new boards in and delete/create necessary categories afterwards.

However, you did almost the complete opposite, so not sure what you could do without destroying your databse, and without spending so much time.

If you think I'm getting the wrong idea, can you please explain yourself a bit more so that I can fully understand? Thanks. :)

No, you pretty much got it. I know I did things in the wrong order, looks like I will be doing a lot of database editing after a lot of copy and pasting.

you could try deleting your current boards, then importing the old boards. Then you can import the topics and finally make the changes to the boards you had made via the admin panel. Seems a lot better than MANUALLY adding all of the posts...

Well, don't copy and paste, but rather export and import. That would be a way faster task.

Hmmmm, explain that one to me please. Database wise? Is there a way to import/export topics without the board info?

tyty1234

No there is no way to do that. Have you tried what hadesflames suggested?

Too late for that unfortunately, new posts on the new boards already.....

No worries, if it cannot be done it cannot be done. Hopefully someone learns from my lack of planning.
