Clash with IPB

I need to keep some members happy by having an IPB forum so as to run IB pro arcade on it (and for no other reason than that...GROAN!) but for all other forum use I want to use SMF and its excellent arcade has already won some over.

My problem is that having installed SMF and got it running quickly, easily and with no problems at all (kudos to the developers!) with the arcade and other mods installed (again no problems) when I then try to install IPB forum in another directory with its own database, although both installs are done properly, they crash each other...if one or the other is present all is well but with both on the same server I land up with neither working. Given that they use different databases, are in different directories etc what is going on and please can you help me to fix the problem so that I can run both of them?

Many thanks in anticipation of your kind replies.

Ask on the IPB forums...

People pay for IPB for forums and they come to SMF for support ?

Geez!

The Answer to your question: You need two different mysql database prefixes.. for eg. If your SMF mysql database prefix is "smf_" then the IPB mysql prefix cannot be "_smf" .. I hope this clears stuff up ;)

I'm afraid that's likely not the issue, as it was described that they were installed in separate databases.

Interesting.  Do you get any errors?  By not working, what do you mean?

Did you install SMF with the "use database driven sessions" option enabled?  Did you enable or disable output compression?

Can you post links to each forum software?

Surely this is as much SMF as IPB? It's a clash between the two and, for the record, I used the last free version of IPB not the current, expensive, one so there is no support on that front.

When I had both forums installed I got a single curly bracket showing when I tried to load index.php from either system. I pulled the IPB forum off my server so as to keep SMF running properly...my allegiance being to this system it was the old IPB board that "got the chop". Other than the obvious very big error no other errors were showing...each database passed checking as OK. The database prefix for the SMF forum is, indeed " _smf" and that for the IPB forum was "_ipb"...two different databases.

I installed SMF as "use database driven sessions" and turned gzip off as my host doesn't support it.

I'm building a site so rather than pay for hosting at this stage I'm using a free host (ad supported)...it could be an issue with the ads though as each forum will work properly if the other isn't there that too seems unlikely.

Having removed it I can't give you a link to my IPB forum but the link to the SMF one is:

http://www.voxpopuli.websiteallies.com/SMF/smf_1-0-3_install/index.php

Prior to installing the IPB forum the SMF forum worked perfectly, once the IPB forum was removed it worked perfectly again...so I doubt that it has a database error or a configuration error. On another free host I tried things the other way round and sure enough an IPB forum worked as well as it ever does until an SMF forum was installed and again worked once the SMF forum was removed.

As I said before I'm only after the IPB forum so as to run some games on it (thus paying for the latest version isn't on my agenda!) and when I put my site on paid hosting SMF will be my main site forum.

Why don't your users like SMF's arcade mod? I know there are quite a few differences between SMF's arcade and IPB's, but your users should be happy that they at least have games :)

TrueSatan

They are indeed...and for the record they merely want more (sounds familiar doesn't it?). The IPB system has an RPG and extra games you see so it's not a matter of any dislike of the SMF systems.

BAlGaInTl

That is odd...

I run the last free version of IPB and SMF 1.0.3 on the same server currently.  I've seen no interference between the two.

An interesting problem you have there.

TrueSatan

Just so...I can't, for the life of me, see why there should be any interraction between them yet they act as though they were both installed in root even though that is not the case (I mean that they show the same error and same screens as you would get from two scripts installed in root and fighting for ownership of it).

Interesting and annoying...
