Upgrade from 1.1 RC2 to 2.0 final

Guys,

I am currently running 1.1 RC2 (yes I know...a little out of touch lol) and I'm waiting upon the final release of 2.0 - I am wondering if the upgrade process will be simple, i.e. will the install cater for the upgrade of the DB etc or do I first need to upgrade to an interim version in preparation?

I will of course do all of the above on a test server prior to final upgrade.

Finally, does anyone have an idea when 2.0 may be released?

Many thanks,

Yağız...

Just download Large Upgrade for SMF 2.0, replace your files and run upgrade.php.

You can even upgrade from SMF 1.0 :P

Nice, sounds simple! I do however want to start with a clean file structure, is there a way that I can start with a fresh version of 2.0 (when it's released!!) and just point it to the DB to be upgraded, then copy across Avatars etc?

Also, does v2.0 implement the Attachments folder's a little more cleverly, i.e. to stop the folder becoming so full that FTP's incapable of listing the directory?

Yes you can go via your plan, although 1.1 RC2 is really outdated version and it is highly advised to upgrade to the latest versions for security reasons. You can always implement the same way to go from SMF 2.0 RC3 to SMF 2.0 Final when it is out. SMF 2.0 RC3 and SMF 1.1.11 are much safer version of SMF compared to SMF 1.1 RC2. :)

Many thanks, I'll do some testing! Is there any indication as to the release of 2.0 final?

Nope, there is no release date set for SMF 2.0 Gold. It is all in the hands of devs and managers. The moment they feel that SMF 2.0 is worth getting public, they'll bring it out. ;)

Lovely, thanks mate, I'll get testing with the upgrade!

Regarding my question about attachments, has that been solved in this newer version? Also, if I point the new install to my old DB (or a copy of it), will it alter existing columns and delete unnecessary ones or leave them intact (i.e. from third party mods)

Make a backup before you do anything at all with SMF. So if anything goes wrong, you can revert back. (This includes the database)

I have no idea about your attachment problem, although yes. Have a look in the change log provided on the download page. It should tell you what has been done.

Only pointing will not cause anything, although the files will execute commands needed for SMF 2.0 RC3 onto a 1.1.x version which can cause problems. So point the files first, then run the upgrade. Yes the mods will be affected. All the mods will be lost during the upgrade. If you want the mod data back, leave the database entries from the mod on the database, and install the 2.0 version compatible mods instead of 1.1.x once. It might bring your data back.

Upgrading SMF - This should help you with the upgrade.

Sorry to open up my old topic but I might be attempting an RC3 upgrade tonight!!

Here is my proposed upgrade method...

- Backup EVERYTHING!
- Create new folder structure and upload the contents of the Large Upgrade package
- Mirror the existing 1.1 RC2 DB to create a new copy of it
- Run the upgrade script and point it to the new copy of the DB.
- After successful upgrade, copy Avatars, Attachments and other bits into the new folder structure

As a draft concept, would the above work? Does the upgrade process move/change any of the folder structure or is it specifically the DB that the script upgrades?

Nope, but I would suggest you put the Attachments/avatars, which can be found in the Attachments directory in the new Attachments folder while doing the upgrade.

It might cause issues if you don't. I'm not sure.

You'll need to upload the files from the installationpackage if you want to create a new folder structure.

But why would you do that?

Why not just backup, upload the files from the upgradepackage and run the upgrade? Even during the upgradeprocess, before the upgrade of the database, there's an option to backup your current databasetables.

Why so complicated?

Maybe to keep the real forum still up so that there is very minimum down time? Although the downtime isn't that bad when upgrading.

Ah, that makes sense.  :) I agree with you on the upgradetime, it's pretty fast.

Thanks for the responses, yeah I wish to keep downtime to a minimum whilst also testing the forum for some time running parallel whilst implementing mods etc on the new build.

So should I unzip the Full package, then unzip the upgrade package on top of it so as to give me a fresh 'settings' file?

Yes, you can do that.

Cool, the problem I have with the Attachments folder (from the existing build) is that it contains so many files that FTP almost dies whenever I try to access it, I am hoping that SMF v2 does something a little better with it, to segment it into subfolders perhaps?

Will the above upgrade process work if I don't copy over the attachments folder at this stage? Does anyone know exactly what the upgrade process does from a file structure point of view?

Kill Em All

I have not tried upgrading without the Attachments directory, I would imagine it would work though.

In 2.0, you can create multiple Attachments directories and select default ones for time being, then make a new default one.

I have made a copy of the existing site structure and a mirror of the DB, then overwritten the structure with the Large Upgrade package. Having uploaded it all and heading to upgrade.php I get the following error...!?!?

QuoteUpgrading from YaBB SE!
The upgrader was unable to find some crucial files.

Please make sure you uploaded all of the files included in the package, including the Themes, Sources, and other directories.

Kill Em All

The only things that could possibly cause this issue is that you either didn't upload all the files from the large upgrade package or they are not CHMOD properly. Folders should generally be 755 or 777 and files should be 644.

I don't seem to be having much success here, why would it think that my installation is YAB and not SMF 1.1 RC2? I have tried setting permissions for all folders/files to 777 recursing deep into directories and still no luck :(

Any ideas guys?
