I happen to think they DO look professional (Whatever the fark THAT is).

They certainly look more professional than the previous candy-coated and noisy badges. Of course, like anything, they can always be improved.

I think that they look good, without being obtrusive.

Clean, without being Lary.

Gary, thanks for these ugly new badges... ::)
Oh sure. Blame me. It's not like I knew they were to be replace with graphics you think are crap. I'm entitled to protect my work, as are you to protect your work.

Remember, I designed those ones to be identifiable by colour, not by text, and I also designed them in such a way that they wouldn't be so easy to rip/copy which plagued the first set that SM.org had, and will surely plague these. Next time think of if I had a reason to do something in a certain way. I did state both points possibly multiple times when the new sets were being designed.

I understood your reasons, and they made sense. Doesn't mean I can't have an opinion about the looks.

The first design was a variation on an existing badge style (just the "SMF" on them was added), so copies of that style are understandable. Also, yes, this style is likely to be copied as well, but as long as the team is okay with this, there isn't really an issue. Concerns about people using these images as their avatars on this site would exist no matter what style, even your old badge style, and monitoring for this would exist no matter what.

Honestly, i can live with those new badges. Could you change atleast non team badges, they look less nice without that tab what team has. It looks like it misses something if you know what i mean.

Does anyone have those orginal team badges? I mean those what we have at start?

I'm working on the text, too.

We'll get there, eventually. ;)

Brettflan

I agree that a thicker, more readable font would do wonders and probably make them look less retro-futuristic.
Also, for the badges with solid stripes (like the Beta Tester and SMF Friend badges), I think they would look better if they faded up at the spot where team badges have the little tab to the right. Basically, like the Charter Member badges do, but further to the right. Or, it might look better with a more well defined edge like the team badges have; worth experimenting a little.

I might have them somewhere, maybe. I deleted all of the SMF internal stuff I had when I resigned, but there might be something in an old backup.

Anyway, the Internet Archive should have most of them:

Not found: Site team, Designer, Modification Team

Heck, i wouldn't mind them being used again.

Edit: A generator for that style can be found at http://www.marcovanveelen.nl/buttongenerator/badge1/index.php

The SMF style is just slightly different. It's thinner and also has a faint line in the middle. There is also the SMF lettering.

Well, now you can see the idea behind current ones: adding a curve and some slight bevelling on the textarea, but keeping the font and the thin colored line on top. I reduced the "team" area a bit too, maybe too much..but that was to make room for long names, which was an issue back then.

And heres where I question your prefrence at all. The linked online version are taller, but otherwise much the same design. So, only difference is the height. Only difference to current ones are what I descibed. Go figure. ::)

I bet you won't make a submission, again, Bloc, my old mate. :(

Owdy

Bloc, you are great designer. If one time some people dont like one of your designs, it isnt end of the world mate. Get over it, theres no reason to be mad or sarcastic. I didnt mean to insult you, i just dont like those XP badges.
