I hope it's ok to start a poll on this topic, but given the number of views on the other thread about this issue, http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=10166.0
I thought it might be a more useful way to guage opinion of the SMF community

The question is:
Should SMF have a feature which enables users to post messages to forums via email?

The above link discusses this in more detail, and I guess we can continue posting comments there

It's been posted lots of times that 1.1 will make it not too hard to do.

Ok, perhaps the first chioce should read '...please implement now'

You forgot the option that says "no because it won't be secure unless they log in anyway"

I think the developers can confirm if this would actually  be the case?  so I didn't want to put it as option as it may be an incorrect assumption

Erm... 'now' as in 'please implement in 1.1' or '... as soon as possible'
LOL - is that any better ?
Else I give up  :(

But I said 1.1 makes it fairly easy to do :P.

As Ben said SMF 1.1 will at least make this a possibility. I have a little script for 1.1 which will allow you to reply to notifications by email and them appear on the board. The problem is this isn't a secure feature, in that it would be very easy to spoof. This *could* be implemented in a more secure way by logging each message which is sent out and giving it a unique ID - but this would be a strain on large announcement posts etc. Basically 1.1 will allow you to do the basics (With the help of a script), but anything more advanced than a basic security check will require a modification.

Personally I'd love to see this 'feature/mod'.  Currently you can use echoforum's software to do it, but they are a pay service, and are still in 'growth mode'.

My site is a service related forum and I'd like to echo various employment postings from other services (specifically craigslist, which can be set to email their posts individually or as a group) to a read-only board.  It would give me the ability to have a 'one stop shopping' kind of forum.

Dang ... go away for a couple of months and see what you miss!  Of course I'd be a couple of weeks too late to beta  :-\
