I installed 2 copies of beta, (one installed from zero, one upgrade from 1.0.5) and both have same problem:
the package manager show me the same error mesage:

You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory is not writable!

but the Packages directory is 777, in both cases, and are two different servers.

Thanks :)

I've got the same problem with messages, it's showing I have one new when i've actually read it.  I'm also getting 8 or 9 pages of errors every time I go into my personal messages.

If you're having this problem, try this query:

UPDATE smf_members
SET unreadMessages = 0
WHERE ID_MEMBER = ###
LIMIT 1;

Where ### is your member id.

Ok ... finally getting around to trying this fix, and it seems to have worked.  Can you tell me if this is just a temp fix until the next release or should it fix the issue for good?

Grudge

IIRC the next release should fix this - it also does the above in "Find and Fix any Errors" - so you'd never have to manually do it :D
I'm only a half geek really...

Installed 1.1 because I thought it would solve my problem of not being able to use the package manager on my server.  Had heard 1.1 would fix the problem.  However, trying to install any mod (even the default ones that show up) brings up this error:

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/httpd/vhosts/christmas-corner.com/httpdocs/christmas-forum/Sources/Subs-Package.php on line 767

any suggestions?

Please try deleting all the directories, .tar.gz files, and .zip files in the Packages directory.

QuotePlease try deleting all the directories, .tar.gz files, and .zip files in the Packages directory.

Deleted those (leaving me with only index.php, installed.list and server.list).  Tried to install a mod and it still gave the error.  It also created a new Temp folder and put the zip file for the mod (gmail mod) into the packages folder.  So, that didn't work.

strange, but there is no error mesage both in forum logs and error log from site.
the problem is that the file .zip is downloaded in the Packages directory, it's there, why Package Manager said that he can't write there?
and of course didn't find any other mod manualy dwld there, so I can not instal any mod with package manager . . . :)

I have the same problem-- running 2003 Server and IIS6 -- however I can download a file then go to the Upload a package and browse for the package and install - But from the Package servers it will say the Packages is not writable

Will there be an easier way to upgrade in the fianl version?

I waited and have read 22 pages of some scaring issues.
We have 400 members and 1000's post a month they would freak if I screwed this up.

Should I just wait?

Backup your database beforehand and you'll be fine :).

yes, you should wait. If you are nervous. it is a beta, which means it's still in the testing/progression stage.
The only thing php can't do is tell you how much milk is left in the fridge.

I think I may wait,

I'm not sure what to tell you.  That error should *never* happen.  I'm afraid to ask, but... would it be possible to give me temporary access, just to the SMF install, and an admin account - so I can try to reproduce it?

No, I mean, please search this forum for your message - You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory is not writable!

Five days ago I did a clean install of 1.1 Beta 3 and I had received the same Package Manager error as above.  I did exactly everything that Unknown had suggested, and I am able to download mods now, but I'm having issues installing them.  When I go to Apply the mod, the page just hangs.  It never leaves that page.

Then last night I tried it again and it let me install two of them - and then quit again.  I had like a window of one minute.  I haven't been able to install any since.

SeaOfSin

Other than the package manager are there many other bugs?

I have been using it for a few weeks now and I haven't noticed anything besides that

I tried to upgrade from SMF 1.0.5 but got this error:

QuoteCreating new tables and inserting default data...
    Creating "collapsed_categories"... done.
    Creating and verifying "permissions"... Unsuccessful!
This query:

    ALTER TABLE smf_permissions
    ADD addDeny tinyint(4) NOT NULL default '1';

Caused the error:

    Duplicate column name 'addDeny'

What is the problem?

Looks like your themefiles are outdated.
