Member tagging idea?

Many forum software is going social to keep up with social networking demands. I think having a "tagging" option as a default feature (that can be turned on or off of course) would really make SMF more unique than other forum software. An example of this idea is that you make a post lets say about a member and you want them to see it. Instead of having to PM or tell them to go see the post, you could "tag" them to the post and they could get a PM, email or notification or whatever saying they have been tagged in a post and provide a link to it.

What do you all think?

I see. Yeah I suppose it would be a good modification (wish it existed!) :) but I think it would be a better default feature, personally.

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

Well for the example I gave you :) If you want a certain member to see a post (this would be handy on larger forums) and you don't want to go through the process of PMing or contacting them, you can tag them and them be sent an alert that they were tagged in a post. I suppose this feature would not be of use to some but there are a lot of features that are default that are not that worth, for example, I personally don't like the Karma feature because it can easily be abused. But its there and probably there to stay :P

The problem with tagging in this manner is that the other person can't control who and what is tagged with their name. It's kinda like what Facebook is doing - and what is getting a lot of backlash. Imagine being tagged in a picture taken at a strip club. (Facebook now offers to auto-tag in photos, or at least did - I haven't followed the fallout of that)

On forums it's a little more controlled since most people on a forum remain pseudanonymous, but there is still concern that if these tags are public, a person could be harassed by being tagged on various posts.

For this reason, that it's easy to abuse the ability to tag others, I am against this suggestion. Not that I have any power to decide, however.

I think a "share with member" feature would be a good replacement. No tags, no Facebook-style abusive features, and an easy way to share a link with another member. Of course, users should be able to disable this feature if they want - globally by admin, or per-account with a user-level setting.

I see what you all mean :) Well whatever the decision is about it, I am fine with the answer. In all, I am only trying to help :)

Can you please explain, what exactly would be the differences between the "share with member" feature, and "tagging":
- settings to enable/disable mentioning one's name, admin and user-level
- the mentioning is not publicly visible (is not in the post)

Is there something else I'm missing here?
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.

My understanding is that the "tagging" would be publicly visible, while the "share with a user" would be more like an extension of the existing "send this topic" feature and would be private.
