Hi,

I only recently got SMF 1.1.13 up running and within a few days I've got lots of rubbish in there.
Somehow the spammers bypassed the email activation process. I cleaned it up a few times before but soon become flooded again.

Here's a snapshot of what the board looks like (also attached to this post):

or here is the direct link to my spammed board.

Any advices please? How do the rest of admins deal with things like this?

Thanks.

Plus,as Bluedevil showed me,ask questions that folks that are likely forum members would know..
If it is for mechanics, tool questions,if it is for any field in general, ask questions related to that field.
I went from spamonomics to no problems with 4 related questions.
Also, that set of questions, that original welcome from SMF seems to be spam food.If you are using it,start another forum section and transfer all of that stuff and delete it.
Good luck and welcome!

They showed me.

I have a vested interest in this, but I can recommend the BotScout plugin. We have hundreds and hundreds of SMF users and have gotten very good feedback about its effectiveness. You can find it here:

Today I just got 96 new spammers on my SMF forum that are advertising porn and other rubbish stuff and making bad links to fake websites and spam. Incredible! My site record! Luckily, I used the memberlist to bulk-delete the users.

MrMike

Use the mod that prevents them from adding links of any type until they've made "x" number of posts. I find that 5 or 10 posts is usually sufficient to curb that kind of stuff.

Hi Mr Mike, that sounds like a good idea. What mod is it called please? Thanks.

What are spammers? I have not seen more that two ad posts all year at my site?

A good captcha (or some sort of login test), bad behavior and stop spammer is all most sites will need.
I have been truly inspired by the SUGGESTIONS as I sit on my throne and contemplate the wisdom imposed upon me.
