I posted about this a couple months ago but didn't get much.  I just spent a while digging in to it and am getting nowhere!

Autosuggest just does not work on my forum (sorry, private forum I can't provide a link to test).  There is no indication that it's doing anything at all.  I see that suggest.js is included when the Send PM page loads, but nothing happens.  This is true for all users, all browsers.

I saw some posts about an option to enable it in the theme?  I cannot find that option anywhere.

Our mods are below.  People have suggested that it could be another mod interfering with it, but Im having trouble coming up with a reason any of the below would be.  Suggest.js is readable by web browsers, everything seems good to go.

SMF 2.0.1.  This is the last really major problem I am having with this software.  Would really appreciate the help.

well, the first and foremost question would be...   does it work on your forum without any of those mods?

Install a test instance of the forum in a different directory with a different database and check whether it works at all with the basic software package.   If it does, then apply the mods and test after each mod...   when it stops working, you will have your culprit.

if it never works, then it's either a problem with your own browser (do your users have the same problem, or just you) or it's a problem with your server.... since it works just fine on 5 installations that I have on 5 different servers.

I have a hunch it could be a theme problem. Are you using a custom theme?

Yea, it's happening to all my users.

I believe I did test this when I built the forum, but we were under somewhat of a time crunch so I couldn't dig into it as much as I wanted.

I will build a test instance and report back.

Yes!  Crap, should have mentioned that.

Back in Black 2.0.

I had to do a little customizing to make things work with how the previous admin had things set up.  I think, actually, that this is a very likely candidate for being the problem.  The only thing is why.

I am going to build that test instance and see how things go.

Illori

can you test with the default theme and see if it happens there as well? if so then you know it is a mod, if it does not happen with default then it is the theme.

Kindred

good catch Live...   the theme should have occurred to me as well. :)

Craaaaap.

Tried copying the forum over and switching to the default theme. - Autosuggest wouldn't work.

Built a fresh test instance of the forum with no mods.  Imported the DB. - Autosuggest worked fine.

Installed the theme.  - Autosuggest worked fine.

Started installing the mods.  Got a lot of errors, which is extremely strange because this didn't happen when I built the 2.0 board, but just went ahead installing them anyway. - Autosuggest worked fine.

Got to installing nneonneo's AJAX ShoutBox.  No errors in this one.  - Autosuggest broke.

This is not good.  I need to figure out why the shout is breaking autosuggest.  The shout is the one absolutely non-negotiable mod that I must have installed.  By far the most popular feature of the site.

Ugh.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Illori

you could try posting in the mods support thread and see if the author or others that use the mod can help you fix the problem.

Update: I uninstalled the mod from the test board and it started working again.  Downloaded the latest version, installed it, and it broke again.  Argh!

Thanks Illori...I will do that!

Kindred

sounds like there may be a collision of javascript functions or variables...

That's actually something we (the team) might want to look into it. If a modification is breaking core functionality.

endus

Ahhhhh, yea a function name collision...very good thought.  That could be tricky to fix with a hack on my side.

Labradoodle - It seems to reliably break it for me.  I installed fresh files on my test forum and the latest stable version of the mod.  Uninstalled and it was working again.

I was thinking about trying the prerelease version of the shoutbox.
