Hi, let's assume that a topic which have 50 sides 1.2.3 ... 50, when the appears a new message in this topic enter in this section and clicking on the topic automatically should move on 50 page where is the new message, unfortunately it isn't that way, entering in topic is on a first page, could you introduce this improvement so that automatically move on last page where is new message? On SMF 1.1x it was that automatically had transferred on last page where appears new message.

emanuele

It is the same in 2.0, click on the "new" icon" next to the topic title and you will be brought to the first unread message. ;)

I know it emanuele, but you will consider implementing what I wrote higher?
After the click automatically it would skip to the subject to the latest news on the side. I think, that it should be, if it was in previously version script of forum.

emanuele

It has never been like that.
There has been some discussion, but no idea.

Ok, emanuele think about entering this into new version SMF, it's really better using the topic will enable it, in previously version forum 1.1x this option was, in this version isn't, what I have to wrote I wrote, think about it emanuele, it is neeeded, not everyone knows, that after the click to the picture "new" they are proceeding to the latest news on the side.

No, it has *never* been there. The behaviour of the topic title has always been the same: bring to the first page of the topic.

and, IMNSHO, that is the correct way to do it (the way it is currently and has always been done)

Click on the NEW icon to go to the new posts.
Click on the message title to go to the beginning post.

anything else would be illogical and problematic for users who want to re-read the thread from the start

Weeeell...I find handy have the "new" in the title, easier to click... O:)
And most of the users don't care to go to the beginning of the topic.

Ok I understand, but please to watch it in the future, I think this option should be to automatically move to last message on last page. Please remember about this, perhaps you will just enter this solution into new SMF 2.1

Kindred

lol... rimh, you think it should do that... I think it should behave as it does now...

I understand, I just want to give my suggestion, for this is this forum and this section, to put suggestions as for the SMF 2x. The decision belongs to programmers, it's all from me.

MrPhil

There are at least four things a reader could want to do:

  • Start reading at the first post (usually oldest post, unless admin has switched ordering)
  • Start reading at the first post they haven't seen yet ("New")
  • Jump to a given date, post number, page number, or keyword to start reading (not implemented)
  • Jump to the last (usually newest) post. This can be done by clicking on the last page number and then jumping or scrolling to the end of page.
If you've never read the topic, first post = New. If you've read all the posts, there is no New. Therefore it makes sense to have the default action (clicking on topic subject) to be "go to the first post". If "New" is added because there are unread posts, the reader should have to click on "New" to use that function.

I agree that the present implementation is the most sensible, and request that this topic be moved to "Declined Requests" (and locked if necessary).

Kindred

Mr Phil,

you missed one

go to the last post in the thread (usually the most recent) by clicking the icon

Going by probability of use you may agree that a very good amount of people (I'd guess the vast majority) want to go to the first unread post in a topic.
So, a behaviour like:
1) there are new unread messages => go to first unread message
2) there are no unread messages => go to first post of the topic
is not that bad at all and it becomes natural pretty quickly (I tested it by myself and apart from a moment of indecision during the first two times now I prefer it much than the current behaviour of SMF).

I know you will complain that change the behaviour of a link is confusing and so on, but people are not stupid, they just reject changes because they are familiar with what they have, but eventually they get used to novelties and most likely they will end up liking more the novelty rather than the old thing.

actually, I disagree.  In general, people ARE stupid (I have tens of thousands of users who demonstrate that every day)

Then we should change many other things (like return to topic after posting), but we are not because we like it better as it is... :P

2) there are no unread messages => go to first post of the topic
So would there be a visible indicator ("New") that hints which way it would work? I'm not comfortable with having a link work two different ways -- it just seems to cause confusion. If you're going to put up a "New" flag anyway, why not keep the present behavior and have it go to the new posts, and clicking on the name consistently go to the first post. Note: omitting the "New" flag would be undesirable, as you would never know whether you'll end up at the beginning or in the middle somewhere of the topic. Plus, you would not know which topics are fresh. And if you're going to take up real estate with a "New" flag, why not have it do something useful?

If I haven't looked at a topic in a while, I might want to go to the first post to get refreshed on the subject before hitting the new posts. Your way, I would first have to go to the new and then backtrack to the first. If you think this really would be useful, I would suggest making it member-selectable behavior (classic vs. new), and likewise for post order (newest or oldest first), WYSIWYG editor or markup, flat or threaded, etc.

Arantor

QuoteStart reading at the first post (usually oldest post, unless admin has switched ordering)
Start reading at the first post they haven't seen yet ("New")
Jump to a given date, post number, page number, or keyword to start reading (not implemented)
Jump to the last (usually newest) post. This can be done by clicking on the last page number and then jumping or scrolling to the end of page.

Let's see...

First post: the main topic link.
First unread: the (New) button
Jump to a given page number: for multi-page topics, there's already page navigation for those (and has been for years)
Jump to the last post: the last post icon, over in the last post area

So we have all these. The problem is not that we don't have them, but the mystery meat navigation syndrome - the new button doesn't look like a button. The jump-to-page navigation is obvious enough.

Does anything need to be changed?

Kindred

honestly, I don't think we need to change anything here...
