I had an issue where I had a non SMF hack where a ton of spam went out and I got blacklissted in all the mail providers well, supposedly hotmail removed the black list but I am not getting forum emails sent to my hotmail address.

This is one reply from my host.

As you can see from logs the mails are sending out from our server without any error messages, which means hotmail is not rejecting those emails.

You may not get the bounce back mails if you did not specify the "Return-Path" in php script.

Here's my question, how are emails sent from the site exactly, what adress would they appear to be from, what about return paths etc ?

Baically I'm crtchin my head tryin to figure out what's going on if Hotmail removed the black list nd the host is well, I dunno what the host is thinkin.

Edit: I assume if I wa sgetting bounce back emails that there would be some light shed on this since as they said hotmail i not rejecting / blacklisting them.

You should set your forum to use email authentication and set an email account to be used.

I thought the email account to be used was that defined as the webmaster remail address in the server settings.

Edit 3: Would using the SMTP thing in the forum mail settings help ? If so I don't know what to use for the server, port, name and pw. The host last reply said something about authentication and if I understand right turning this SMTP thing on will help with that even though SMF ays it might make things slower or something.

note that SMTP can be slower, and some servers will not take usernames and passwords.

All I know is ever since a malicious file went un noticed for a month or so sending spam (been removed for about two weeks) I've been blacklissted everywhere AFAIK and now no one on ne of my sites are getting post / pm emails etc.

Hotmail seemed to honor a delist my host requested as I got emails for a day but am now not, so I dunno whats up with them. I did do a test email to aol a few min sago and that seemed to go out ok but ended up in a SPAM folder.

The worst thing is not having an easy way to tell me whos delist I'm on. I tried that mxtool crap and I can't make heads or tails of it cause nothing says AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo etc.

You are correct on what email is being used to send the mails. If you said mail was being received ok and a day later isn't i would say your being blocked once again by hotmail, have you gotten onto them again about it to see if this is the case?
