Have you thought about setting IP forwarding up at your router? :)

i have a shi ty router and i have opened port 21 thats what website told me

Your server in your home network will have an IP. You need to configure the router so that connections to port 21 will end up at that IP.
That's called port forwarding.

ok this is my router GUI and this is port forwarding menu
what to put where

For FTP:

Under 1:

Starting port: 21
Ending port: 21
Protocol: TCP
LAN IP Address: enter the local IP of your server here.
(Check ipconfig under windows or ifconfig under Linux)

Under 2:
Starting port: 21
Ending port: 21
Remote IP: 0.0.0.0

Hit save.

If you want to open HTTP as well, do the same just use port 80 instead of 21 this time.

Starting port: 21
Ending port: 21
Protocol: TCP
Lan IP address: [Start -> Run -> type "CMD" hit enter -> type ipconfig hit enter-> The corresponding number of IPv4 address (ex. 192.168.1.2)

---

Starting port: 21
Ending port: 21
Set Remote IP Address: 0.0.0.0

Would you mind using a wee bit of punctuation? :) It's hard to read your posts.

Are you saying you don't know the username & password for the FTP server?
If so, it sounds like you haven't finished it's configuration completely.

I think he is referring to the login and password of the router gateway. My guess is that you mistyped the password or log in settings when you configured them.

sorry about my typing. ok so i have this old pc that i was about to throw away. I have 3 TB HDD in it and 6GB of ram. i have triple boot on it Ubuntu, Win 7, and Red Hat.
Now i have Filezilla on it. Whould i be able to set it up with just that or do i need more? and how?

Arantor

What exactly are you trying to do with it?

i want to have this machine to save files on access it remotely, not from another pc in the house

Arantor

Just that? (Just to clarify exactly what software you're going to want... and probably not FTP seeing how insecure the protocol is.)

i ii i  i have not idea, nooo clue
im new to this networking thing sorry

Arantor

You have no idea what you're going to use this computer for beyond just being a file server?

I mean, if it's just file access, you would probably actually benefit from using something like Dropbox instead of a server of your own (which requires security and regular patching, not to mention the fact that upload from server to wherever you are is likely to be slow)

i would like to use this server for music, videos, and school files, and like giving access to my friend who likes games. Me and him play a lot of them and i just want to save the games on it. Plus i have a lot of diffident software which i dont want on cd's.
I want to know where all my files are. i dont want to have some website storing my files(if u know what i mean)

idecay

If i completely format my HDD what OS should i install and what program should i use to setup my server?

thank you
