New Topic notifications only sent to Admins

I'm running the latest version of smf (2.0.5)

for some reason the only notifications that are emailed out are those to administrators.  regular accounts dont get an email notification.  I've tried the following:

"Change current options for all members using this theme" -  under the Themes and layout settings
i select "Change", check the box,  and save for this option:  "Change current options for all members using this theme"

i've tried this under all themes to see if it was a theme issue.  it happens under every theme.  i've also tried this with numerous users and topics.  no topic notifications are sent to regular users.

is this a bug or a setting which i'm missing?

thanks in advance!

That's not how it works. It won't start sending notifications to members. All it does is set things up so when members make new topics (and reply to some, under some circumstances), it will turn notification on for them for those topics.

They can still opt-out.

can we set a default so that a user get's a notify for a replied topic that they created or participated in?

for some reason it seems to work as i mentioned above with admins.  i'd like to set this setting (wherever it is) to all users by default

You have done all you can with it, the default will be set from the Member Options page for any subsequent topics.

Setting it for current existing topics, no, there's no way to do it in SMF's own software, nor is there a mod for it and mostly because it can easily cause problems for most hosting plans.

any particular reason the administrators get notifications for all the topics they created then?

They wouldn't normally unless you'd turned it on for yourself...

notify was never selected.  i even tried this on the test forum i created, so it's whatever is set by default

under what circumstances do these notifications get emailed?

Arantor

Sorry but no, it's not set by default.

All notifications are off by default until you opt in to them.

i appreciate your prompt replies.

i guess what im asking is this.  there is some setting that is notifying admins of ALL topic replies.

1. what is this setting so i can set this for all members?
2. you mentioned before that the setting i listed above was for certain circumstances....what circumstances might this be?

thanks again

Arantor

1. There is no such setting. The only setting that there is, is the one that defaults a user's preference to 'notify me about replies to my topics and posts'

I suspect the reason you're getting notifications is because you've pressed the notify button on either a board or a topic at some point.

2. I think you have a misunderstanding of how it all works.

Write a new topic, or press the reply button (not the quick reply) and under the post you'll see in the additional options area, there is an option to 'Notify me on replies' or words to that effect.

The setting you changed means that defaults to on for users. If users use the full reply area, even for replies, this can turn on. But it shouldn't change in quick reply.
