The youtube video they made to show what happens when they try and login.

They get no error and they are certain their password is correct. It is happening to this member on more than one browser and on more than one machine. What should we do?

I found this under the person's IP:

If they have not already done so, get them to clear their browser's cache and delete the cookie for the site. Then close the browser and open and try again.

They said that they already have done this, but I'll pass it onto them again. But they've tried the cookie-clearing thing already.

Doesn't that error mention a specific file and a line inside that file?

Also, it is just ONE member? Ask him to try another computer and/or browser.

So far it is just this one that I know of. they said this:

Edit: I did that and no luck. Still have the same problem. I doubted it would work since this happens to me no matter what computer or device I use.

Ask the member to register with another username, and see what happens, or manually create a new account for them, and see if they can log in.

They did so:

Just made a new account.
It works perfectly. No issue logging into it at all.

Ask him for permission to login to his account. If he allows you, use the tip here to access it (don't ask for his password):
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/I_accidentally_lost_my_admin_account!_What_can_I_do (last point)

Then try yourself. Then give him the password you set and let him restore it to what he wants.

If there is something wrong with his login, doing this might actually fix it (or not :P )

I've reset the pass and tried to log into the account, and now it isn't accepting the new password I gave it. I KNOW I am keying it in correctly. It just isn't letting me log into it. It refreshes with the login page.

I just realised, it's giving me the same problem that it gave this member.

Is this user's name using any unusual characters?

No, it is only lowercase letters and a number at the end. No spaces.

Arantor

There *are* other characters that are unusual that are allowed in usernames.

Is their username different to their displayed name and they're using their displayed name to log in (because that won't work)
Holder of controversial views, all of which my own.

wynnyelle

I doubt it, as this is an experienced, long-term member on my site, but I'll ask.

wynnyelle

They only log in using their username, not their display name. And yes the two are different, but there are no special characters in the username, and no spaces.

wynnyelle

BUMP. This is still a problem. What do I do next?

azasmith

Worst case scenario if nothing else works, create a new user, the username doesn't matter as it won't be there for long. Go into Admin > Maintenance > Forum Maintenance > Members and assign all posts from the username having issues, to the username you've just created. Go into the problematic accounts Profile and delete it from the Actions menu, create a third account with the same username as the problematic account, go back into Maintenance > Forum Maintenance > Members and transfer the posts from the 2nd account you created, to the new account you've just created that matches the old one. Then delete the 2nd user as well.

I haven't tested this, but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work? If someone slightly more experienced in this would like to confirm nor deny the plausibility of this working?
