I am having a very frustrating time. I CANNOT continue from Step 1 in 2.0.6

It seems that no matter what I do, the Upgrade utility is attempting to Connect, not Continue.

If enter in my admin login and Continue - sent to the same page with 530 Login error
If I disable security and click Continue - sent to the same page with 530 Login error
If I enter my FTP credentials and click continue - no error but sent to same page
If I enter FTP credentials and false admin login - no error but sent to same page

It is asking for your login to this site meaning your login to simplemachines.org. Just enter your name and password you use here.

That might be it or it might be asking him for his FTP credentials to change the file permissions. Will you clarify please, kamegami.

are you trying to do an install or an upgrade? if an upgrade from what version? if an earlier 2.0.* version you can use the package manager to do your upgrade.

Kindred

why would it be asking for his login to this site.? There is no point on your local installation which asks for your simple machines login

All of these responses are incorrect.

I am doing an upgrade. I am running upgrade.php

I've already entered the FTP credentials. I'm done with this step.

I'm trying to enter my admin account and continue to the next step. I CANNOT. IT WILL NOT ADVANCE TO THE NEXT STEP.

It doesn't care what my admin credentials are, even though I click CONTINUE for the next step I'm getting errors for the FTP credentials to set my permissions. I'm not attempting that step. I WANT TO DO AN UPGRADE I'M DONE WITH THE FTP CREDENTIALS I WANT TO MOVE TO THE NEXT UPGRADE STEP AND IT WON'T DO IT.

If I disable security and attempt to proceed to the next step it still will not do it. I don't think the form on the first step is able to differentiate between the Connect and Continue button.

Kamel aim,
No need to be rude. Since you seem to be the only one who has had this issue, it would suggest that there is a problem on your server, with regards to settings or setup.... Not with the smf installer.

If I had to guess, I would say that you have a chmod permissions issue with files... Perhaps with settings.php and/or settings_bak.php

I found the problem. Settings_bak.php was missing.

I had removed it as I had a separate issue where where the upgrade script was obviously ignoring my updating Settings.php. I found that the upgrade script was pulling $boarddir from the database with no indication that it would do so. The database values were wrong because I had migrated to a test server.

The upgrade script apparently does not check for the existence of these files, and instead has random behavior in their absence.

Kindred

well, that would be because the Update script assumes that you have a working board already present (which includes Settings and Setting_bak.) So there is no need ot check for these files unless someone has (as you did) purposefully crippled the system by deleting a critical file
