Hello there!

To this day i was using SMF 2.0.6, but I finally decided to update it, so I started to do it manually, accordance with the instructions given under the link: http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/

And I've got some questions:

1. If I did everything what was written there (link), and I can find on my forum, that I've got 2.0.7 version - and every single file looks updated - then it really means that i've got updated 2.0.7 version? Isnt it important to do it by downloading a file, and installing it automatically by packages option?

2. I can find there - at the bottom - an inscription "fix_calendar.php"
What does it mean? How can I install it? Is it even important? Should I even install it?
Is it enough to put it in ftp - near ssi.php - and just open: myforumlink.eu/fix_calendar.php [nofollow] ?
And then see "Database changes are complete!"? So that's all, or what?
I can't see that something was changed after receiving this information (basically I do not use forum's calendar too often) Calendar files looks same too. Hm.

you really should not be doing this manually... you should let the package manager do it for you automatically.

Aw, so it looks like i did something wrong by doing it manually or what?
So if yes- then i would like to understand what's wrong with doing it manually? :|
It looks like my forum works fine etc, but maybe ur right - i would like to understand it.

Illori

by doing it manually you have no automatic backup and you have lost the easy of uninstall if you run into an issue.

you can do it that way but some people run into issues and as i said they loose the automatic backup and the easy of uninstall.

Xar0ne

Ochh, I understand :)
Im not that afraid of issues, cause i've got all these files on my PC, and even if there will be any issue, then i'll just upload them again.
Or simply try to paste older code (which worked) or smt.
I was more afraid of installing it automatically, cause some files was edited by me, and this update could spoil something - i prefer to see what is changed.

I just wanted to be sure, that manual option is still good - if all went well - and after all introduces the same things as automatic one.

Also i would like to hear something about my 2nd question, and I'll be done :)

you know deleting your post and reposting it to bump will not get you a better/faster answer and may actually cause people to ignore your thread totally?

Xar0ne

Yeah, I did it once, cause it looks like my thread died, and i decided to bump it this way - rather than send 2nd post or something like that. I saw an option to delete it, so i used it.
But if doing it this way is that bad, then I would like to really apologize for it - I dont want to bring this discussion to such a low level, and Im really trying to be nice here. I just came here, cause this forum looks really cool, and helpful, and it seems that people know alot of things. I hope some of u can just share it with me, but for now I just get alot of informations, but nothing about a problem that I have described :/

I just really would like to get an answer to the question that I asked - nothing more. Is it too much?
Eh, sorry.

well, first of all - as Illori said, you really should be using the package manager to install mods, including patches.   Even if you have custom coding, it's not like the package manager just overwrites your code.

second... yes. load and run the php file for fix_calendar.

Its like... Some of my files was 2.0, and some 2.0.7, that's why I decided to do it for the first time manualy - to see how it all works etc. And yeah - it looks like... all in all I might as well do it automatically. Now, when all my files are up to date, I'll probably install next updates automatically :) Thx again, and sorry about my rude bump.
