I haven't had my site running for awhile and in the meantime my php was upgraded to 5.1.55. My forum was still on SMF 1.6 or 1.7. I tried to do an update awhile ago and it wouldn't update to SMF 2 and I gave up trying. In the meantime php has been updated and now I can't get into my forum at all. Can someone please help. I do have a backup.

There is no SMF 1.6 or 1.7. Please state your actual version.

As for PHP, SMF 1.1.x DOES work with it, just throws a horrible amount of PHP warnings :P

What error do you have now? Still the "Connection problems"?
What did you do to upgrade? Also, what's your current "status"? What files version do you have, did the upgrade ever touch the database?

It could be 1.1.6 but I can't get in to find out. Here is my exact error
Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Before my site was upgraded I could get in but I couldn'.t do any upgrades. Now I can't get in at all

That error suggests that either the database username/password/name is wrong, or the database simply doesn't exist.

Or that, in some oversold hosts, the database server disappears without warning...

Does anyone have any idea what I do to fix this? I checked and according to my history there has never been a backup of the forum but before the upgrade to php 5 there was an upgrade daily. When I contacted customer service to find out why my database had never been upgraded the tech said they where having problems upgrading and had to get their specialist to upgrade my database. Since the upgrade now the forum doesn't work at all. Should I be getting ahold of them to find out what they did? As soon as they upgraded I got warnings in email about every 20 minutes. I don't want to loose all info in my forum as I had more than 100 members and a lot of posts.

So get yourself a backup ;) Do you have cPanel? If so, get one of those full backups ;)

As for that error, well, there isn't really much to it... Either the database isn't there or it momentarily disappears... In either case, you need to ask your host about it.
If they are too unresponsive, maybe it's time to think about alternatives...

I was thinking the same. It took 2 weeks to get them to do the update. I am giving them 24 hours to reply to my request on what happened to all my backups. I did download the whole forum to my computer. It now says my database for my forum is 0.0 mbs so I don't know if they deleted it when they did the update or where they put it.

Do you see your tables and content inside in phpmyadmin? If so, export it as soon as possible.

2 weeks?! Oh my...

You MGHT be lucky...

Go to your site's CPanel.

In the "Files" section, do you have an icon labelled "R1Soft Restore Backups"?

If you have, click it and you'll see some backups that you can download.

If you're lucky...
