Having just upgraded an Alpha 1 install to a Beta 1 install, I wanted to install the Beta English British language file. I searched for English and it found four, I selected the following:

Beta1_english_british SMF 2.1 english british 2.1 No Install

But clicking Install it brings up an Error:

Quote from: Error MessageThe Simple Machines site is not responding. Please try again later.

I can download the file manually from the language file download site here.

Ah, think I've found the answer, the language files archives are all empty. Downloaded each and they are 0KB.

I'll happily write a British English file if it's not yet been done, just PM me.

there is an issue on the server, the packs are there just not being served correctly. the server team is looking into the issue.

I believe that we did warn that the translations were not fully functional yet - even without a server glitch.... :P

You mean this?
QuotePlease note: Because this is the first beta release, translations and language strings other than English have not been finalized and may not be complete yet.
Well OK but it doesn't say they don't work at all or give errors when trying to download them. Never mind, I did my own so at least Centre and Colour are spelt correctly :D

There are hundreds and hundreds of changes across the language pack from US to UK English.

I know, but all I wanted to do was review it using Original English words. I'm not trying to be difficult or make a fuss just wanting to review the Beta in the way I would use it if it were live.
My language pack is merely a copy of the Beta language pack where I've gone through each file spell checking the words for Color, Center and Honor, about 30 hits in all. No doubt there are others but that's enough for me to be going on with.

I want to see if I can rewrite my 2.0 mods to work in 2.1 so having the beta setup to be as near to a live site as possible is needed. ;)

If you're trying to review it as if it were live, then you should really wait for the site team to fix the download setup because there are other things that can affect the installation beyond just the language strings.

And doubly depending on whether you're using UTF-8 or not, too, especially since 2.1 install encourages going UTF-8 these days...

OK, will do, though I didn't notice any "You should really be using UTF-8 now" messages when running the upgrade.

No, the upgrader doesn't force it because I felt this was not something that we could legitimately force at the time (at least, I'm the one who made the installer go UTF-8 primarily, I deliberately didn't change the upgrader and it seems to have been agreed with since)

Yes, you really should have been using UTF-8 for years in all honesty but I think there are misunderstandings about what UTF-8 does and what is involved with it.

I'm still NOT using UTF-8 on my main forums, perhaps you could kindly point me to an article which explains why I (and others) should? Innocently, I just thought it was the need to support foreign characters was the only reason to.  :-\

That depends if you ever want to use things like the pound sign.

There is more in Unicode than foreign or accented letters, including things SMF cannot properly support at this time like some of the emoji from iPhones.

You have no reason not to use UTF-8 whatsoever.

Oldiesmann

The upgrade script doesn't force UTF-8 because converting the data is a complicated process. We decided that it wasn't something we could easily handle in the upgrade. You can convert from the admin center though. Go to Admin -> Maintenance -> Forum Maintenance -> Database and you'll see the option.

Thanks for the explanation. Are there any performance improvements in changing to Unicode - especially on a large (1million plus posts) forum?

Thanks, I knew it was there, just never thought there was a need to use it as my forums are all UK based.

No improvements but having everything work would be good. Like I said, you have no reason not to.
