Poll editing....

I think when ever a poll is edited by someone it should be logged in the Moderation Logs and we should have the ability to see the persons who voted on that poll instead of going to the database

Kindred

Mayb the first.... NEVER the second.

The point of polls is to have an ANONYMOUS vote... If you want known votes then just have people type out their vote and/or reasoning in a normal post.

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

Actually I'd be OK with the latter if it was clear before voting that this would be what would happen. If people know their votes will be public (or semi-private, e.g. shared with the poll starter only) before voting, I don't see a problem with that.

Illori

there are mods that will show you who has voted in a poll already available for 2.0.

I actually launched a competition a few days ago and I need to launch a full investigation before I actually declare 3 winners... I've heard people created multiple forum accounts to vote with and I might need to search over 300+ accounts matching IP's or contact the owner to search the database to retrieve the person who voted on that poll

Hence why It should be visible for the Administrators / Owners of the forums

Kindred

Your is an edge case that is less than .0001% of the forum usage ...   And sorry, but it violates the entire concept of the poll system.    So, no... We will never do that ... For admins or anyone else.

You isn't find someone to make a mod for you...  I think there used to be one, but it will never be part of the core product.

As for people cheating on your poll... Even if you installed it now, I do not think that the mod is retroactive.

oh, but it is. It uses SMF's "hidden" data to work.

And you 100% think everyone is going to answer the same exact way they did in the poll or reply at all?

Kindred

If people don't want their answers to be tracked back to them, then who are you to insist that they do?
If people want to be dishonest, then they are going to be dishonest.

Basically, there is a mod to track who voted what...  However, it is fraught with potential legal implications -- not the least of which is -- you had damned well better tell your users that you are tacking that information.   And, as I said, it will never be included in SMF core product, as long as I have any say (and most others feel the same way that I do about it)

Well, the information must be tracked otherwise how would it know what a user voted for? It has to know if you voted for something to prevent you voting again.

Kindred

yes... the information is "tracked" in the same sort of way that PMs are tracked...

And - for the same reaons that we will never release a feature for admins to read a user's PMs, we will never release a feature to expose the tracking of the polls.

If someone wants to consciously install a mod to do that, then the onus is on them, not us, for violating a user's expectation of privacy.

And if you have the option at the point of poll creation to offer the choice of visibility... There is no problem here. I did this for Wedge and I see no problems with it.

Oldiesmann

I'm fine with it as well as long as we let people know their votes will be visible to others or at least the admin before they vote. Adding a feature which will retroactively enable that for all polls is not going to happen however.

I guess the ANONYMOUS vote is much popular. If your poll is favored by many people and they all vote and leave their names;  Can you guarantee that you are able to remember them? So anonymous voting is acceptable.

That is not the point of a poll at all. A poll is a figurative head count which may or may not be anonymous.

The OPs view is one that is shared by many admins. In fact most forum software offers the option of posting anonymous or public polls as part of the core so your perception that it 'violates the entire concept of the poll system' is demonstrably wrong.

Legal implications under whose jurisdiction? Personally I've never seen or heard of such a thing.

I have to say I find it somewhat disconcerting to see the lead developer of SMF is so out of touch with the expectations of what I suspect is a sizeable number of forums admins and it wouldn't be the first time a sensible and easy to implement enhancement has been shot down in flames.

Arantor

Quoteit 'violates the entire concept of the poll system' is demonstrably wrong.

Can we at least agree on the notion that it violates the developer's original intent when implementing this system? It was intended to be anonymous by its original developer. And just because other software does it does not demonstrate that any one piece of software should or should not do it.

I find it somewhat disconcerting to see that people assume project manager == lead developer (they are different people with different responsibilities). The lead developer did in actual fact agree with you.

My apologies, I didn't make that assumption but I did misread the the project manager's title. Thanks for correcting me on that.
