User Name & Symbols

Ok, I've searched the forum & the online documentation, and I cannot find my answer...

I've got a user that wanted to use an ' in his user name, and the system won't allow it. I've looked at the back end, and cannot seem to find anything that restricts the use of that symbol. Can anyone point me in the right direction or let me know if this is even possible?

Are you using UTF8 language?

And what do you mean by the system won't allow it? Is there an error or rejection message when he tries to use one?

It rejected the user ID, I even tried to manually enter it and it rejected me on the administrator side as well.

I'm mobile right now, so I will check the language when I get home.

In 2.0.9 clean install, attempting to register Tes't gets you an 'Invalid character used in Username.' error.  Default character set.

K...I'm guessing the issue is because the language being used is English on ISO-8859-1. So I'm guessing I've got to convert over to UTF8...right?

Think you'll find this is intentional under the hood. I forget why this is so but changing it is a bad idea.

What's intentional? Install default not being UTF8?

Also...when you say changing it is a bad idea...are you suggesting that I should not convert the data over?

no... I believe that he is referring to the error message preventing the single quote.
That error message indicates that it is not a UTF8 issue but is actually, purposeful and programmatically prevented

If so, why not have the username without the apostrophe and the display name with?

I actually got confused there.
Dragon, the username, the one used for login should not have any special characters...
But the display name can.

Yeah, he's got the user name setup now without the ' in it...but I was hoping I could get that taken care of. Completely understandable about the coding issues though.

Do you guys think I should just go ahead & convert over to UTF8 anyways?

Most forums do. I haven't because mine is extremely small and we have no foreign language speaking members and rarely have need for special characters.. Otherwise, I would as well.
