Rejecting images

My members have been having problems for some time  now uploading images. After trial and error, I have concluded that any image name containing characters like underscore ( _ ) are rejected, with the normal error message. Whenever I suggest to my members who's images have been rejected that they rename them using only letters and numbers, the images upload without problem. Is there anything I can do to overcome this issue?

Is there an error message?
what happens?

SMF Version?
Mods Installed?
URL of site?

One more question:  What is your charset?  Is your site utf8?

That uploaded fine to my site? I need to investigate further before asking for your help. Next time there is a problem I will try their image myself. If it doesn't upload, I'll report back here with picture and all other information requested. Many thanks
