Users with special characters in username having to enter password twice

I have seen a couple on threads on this, but none seem to have found a solution. My problem is that users with special characters in the username, such as Ø, Æ and Å, are forced to enter the password twice.

On the first attempt they get "Incorrect password". On the second attempt they are logged in. If I replace the special characters in the username with "normal" characters the users are logged in on the first attempt.

For testing purposes I set up a new installation of 2.0.17 with one admin user and registered one user with Ø in the username. I haven't done anything else with the forum, but the user Øst still fails on first login. By the way, I ticked the UTF-8 encoding box during the installation

You can test it on this site [nofollow]:

User: Øst
Password: 1234

The logs are flooded with these kinds of errors (see attachment).

I'd appreciate if someone can help me solve this issue!
