Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 2.0.15 (more detailed)
Current SMF version: SMF 2.0.18
GD version: bundled (2.1.0 compatible)
Database Server: MariaDB
MySQL version: 10.3.31-MariaDB-cll-lve
PHP: 5.6.40
Server version: LiteSpeed

When I click "boards", "modify boards", this message appears "Board Secret Santa does not have a valid parent. Use the 'find and repair errors' function to fix this."
What happened:
I went to add a child board, but instead of adding it to the parent "Christmas 2021" I think I clicked "modify" on parent Christmas 2021 board, Named the new board, clicked OK (or whatever it was) and this error message popped up. Parent and child boards all disappeared from forum. I ran the "find repair errors", all the boards shown in the salvage area. I moved them to what I thought was the parent Christmas 2021 board, but instead they all moved to "Secret Santa", even the parent Christmas 2021. I tried to move them again and got the message again. Ran the "find repair errors" and it says "Congratulations, no errors found! Thanks for checking."
I check the "reports" and all the boards are there listed in reports. I did find all the boards listed in another place but now can't remember/find where that was. Sorry, I have been going thru so many pages today I can't remember what/where I find things. Now no admin can access the "boards" in Admin Center, the message shows for them all. We can do everything else in Admin Center EXCEPT access the "boards". None of the Christmas boards are showing in the forum now. Any idea how to fix this?

I think this was actually meant to be a reply here and was mistakenly posted elsewhere,
so I'm just going to quote it for you

In your case, I'm going to make the rare suggestion that you edit directly in the database.
in smf_boards table
find the affected boards.
set the field id_parent to 0

this should bring the boards back and let you properly assign child/parent.

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

Thank you both. Can you walk me thru it please? I am not real familiar with this. Where do I find the "SMF Board Table" and how will I edit it?

You will find it at the database that you have used to install your smf forum. Most hosts use phpmyadmin to manage the databases on their servers. If you are not sure about the db name, you can look it up at the Settings.php file which can be located in the root of your forum folder. Hope it helps.

LOL Doug Heffernan. I think you just typed in Martian! I will need more details please. All I have ever done in this forum are make/modify boards, approve/deny members, change the forum header tag. I am ignorant of any of the installing of the forum, etc...The owner who normally tends to things is not available now, so I am having to try to do this. I believe our host is Go Daddy, tho not exactly positive. Would that be where I can find the phpmyadmin? I did go thru the threads here before posting looking for this same problem and possible fixes, and did see several posts about the phpmyadmin but I have not found it in my admin center. Sorry to need so much help, but I thank you and welcome all I can get.

If what I typed sounded like Martian to you, I am afraid that there is not much else that I can do or say further. The best thing under the circumstances, imo, is to find someone who can do this for you. It will be much much easier and faster that way. You can post a request about it at the Help Wanted (not for support) board:

keeping in mind that this person would have to have access to your hosting account/database so make sure it is someone reliable that you can trust.

also make sure that you are able to give said person the access that they would need, as you mentioned you aren't the account owner, you may not have the required permissions especially if you aren't able to find phpmyadmin in your hosting account

in your hosting account somewhere should be something that says phpmyadmin or databases or something to that affect

Go to Admin -> Maintenance -> Forum Maintenance
Click "Run task now" under "Find and Repair Errors"

That should move the board someplace where you can see it and fix it.

I think you missed a crucial bit of info in the OP.

Thank you all so much for the help. I have forwarded all info to site owner and she has informed me that we cannot do/try any of that, but gave no reason. She is supposed to have the forum reset to an earlier date, so currently waiting to see if that helps. Again, I thank you all and so sorry to have wasted your time.

You haven't wasted anyone's time. You learned some things and other users with similar issues may find the advice given useful.

I'm going to mark this solved even though it technically isn't. That way other team members will know they can concentrate on other topics.

If you have any further questions related to this topic, by all means, mark it unsolved and ask away.
