I am currently thinking about what would be useful for users.

At the moment it is so that the admins specify what and who can see in the profile of the user.

Maybe it's not a bad idea that the users can decide for themselves what is shown to whom, especially in their own profile.

Honestly seems like mod material to me

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

I would agree. I'd think it would be a small percentage of people who would make use of a function like that.
DO NOT pm me for support!

The presumption has always been if you don't want people to see it, don't fill it in.

It'd be pretty easy to write a mod that only allows people on your friends list (or whatever SMF is calling it these days) to view certain chunks (like possibly a custom profile page). That might generate some interest, as a mod.

I have a different opinion. With the profile fields there are many new possibilities to give the user a way to enter certain things there.
Why should the user not be able to decide for himself to whom this is displayed.

I can see that you have a different opinion, otherwise this topic would not exist. I was merely outlining what is so and why it is so.

The reality is that the desire for such things is surprisingly small - if it were as desirable as suggested, I would have expected a resurgence of Ultimate Profile where users have the power to do all sorts of things - and yet it is the extreme minority of community members that actually use such features in practice.

Not to mention that it is actually complicated to implement the thing correctly; you are not just reliant on SMF implementing this, but also every mod and theme respecting it. While that might be doable in 2.2... it's going to be a bumpy ride.

I have read the thread. My thinking is I raised a similar question in the following thread https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=579220.msg4099907#msg4099907
Maybe suggestions raised in my conversation can help Matthias?
