I do not know enough to know if this is a bug or an installation or server issue, but it acts like a bug to me.

Version:
QuoteSMF Package SMF 2.1.1 SMF 2.1.1
Sources 2.1.1 2.1.1
Default Templates 2.1.0 2.1.0
Language Files 2.1.0 2.1.0
Background Tasks 2.1.0 2.1.0

Upon first load of the site page when clicking on any of these items at the top of the page (User Name - My Messages - Alerts) it says "...loading," but nothing happens.  After clicking any other link and the page reloads these items work just as they are supposed to.  I have not had any members report an issue with this.  It's just something I have noticed personally.

MODS INSTALLED:

I just asked one of my moderators to test this and they got the same result.

I can not reproduce this myself.

If there are no errors in the console, can you uninstall all your mods and see if that issue will still occur? That is so we can rule out one of the third party mods as being the culprit.

Speaking of which, what was the latest change or modification that you did to your forum prior to this happening? What browser and version are you using?

Bob La Londe

I just uninstalled all MODs and the problem is the same.

I was able to replicate on Firefox, Chrome, and Edge.

I don't recall when I first noticed the problem.  I've been ignoring it while I chase other things.

What's in your browser console?

If it's the first page load and first page load only, I would first check settings for any a possible mix of http/https or www/non-www addresses in there.

likes like a www.url.com vs url.com issue.  Any link works, but if it has www in front the top menus I mentioned perform as described.  Its first page load, but if I edit the URL to have a www. and reload the page with it.  The behavior comes back.  Trying to figure out where to fix that now.

Try repair settings, and make sure all paths and urls are set up the same way.
What is repair_settings.php?

Then you probably want to make a server level redirect to direct users entering with the "wrong" address directly to the correct address.

Changed only the forum directory to www. and it all appears to work properly.

THANK YOU.

Will test further and report back if there is another issues of course.

Good to hear! I'll mark this solved now, but do let us know if you run in to further issues with it.

Sigh.  Not solved.  I broke the site.  LOL.  It worked on the open browser, but when I closed and reopened the browser the site was broken.

"redirected you too many times."

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

Yeah, that sounds like you may have a server redirecting to www and SMF settings to non-www or the other way around.
Check out repair_settings :)

Bob La Londe

Well... maybe its time for the hard restoration again.  Sigh.  LOL

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

Okay, how did you exactly change settings when it broke?

I changed the main url to www.

It appeared to work, but when I closed and opened the browser to make sure it was broken.

I tried changing all the direct URLS (not the /home urls) to www.  Still broken.

Tried changing them all back to http://url.com  Still broken.

Using repair_settings.php?
All the URLs in there need to be set the same way, all http or all https, all www or none www.
What may confuse things, is if you already have some form of redirect in your server settings.

What does repair_settings say for the recommended values? Have you placed any redirection in the .htaccess file?

Can you post the url to your forum?

Bob La Londe

I've rolled it back for now.  (Full upgrade reinstall and reinstall mods.)

Sadly running the forum isn't my day job, so I'll live with that one little issue for now and deal with it again another day.
