It's not my forum; I'm just an admin there but someone else has access to the files, database, etc.

2.1.2, default, the only mod is Pretty URLs.  They wanted me to add some new smileys and I advised them that the directories were not writable.  This morning, I found a PM advising me that the permissions had been changed and to try it again.  Admin==> Smileys and Message Icons==> Add Smiley results in a blank page.

First instinct as to why this happened, if all they did was change permissions?  (I do know that they used a command line to change permissions, they didn't do it through their CP.)   ::)

Ask them if there is any specific error logged in the forum error log pertaining to this. And post it here, if any error is logged.

The error log is clean; it has been ever since they upgraded to 2.1.2 with the exception of members "incorrect password".   I did clear the forum cache and ran "check for errors" but no change.

Ask them if there's any error in the server error log to go with that - that's not the same as the forum error log.

I will, thanks.  I'll let you guys know.   :)

Well...   I don't know why this would matter.  No errors, but they said that the directories "aaron and akyhne" had no content in them (these were the ones giving the "unwritable" error before).  So they deleted the directories entirely and the page came back.  (This after they made them writable, which broke the page.)

 :-\

I'm not sure I understand, but there it is.

I take it that the issue has been solved now?

Oh, I'm sorry; it has.  I'll mark it solved.  I was just still sitting here, scratching my head, trying to work out what the explanation was.   :)

Thanks, guys.

The explanation is, children shouldn't play with command line.

I'll pass that on.   :D
