theme compatibility

Hi Friends,
I'm re-acquainting myself with SMF after a few years away.  Our forum version is 2.1.3, and as yet, it is only a testing site, while we are learning and re-learning (maintenance mode).

I'm finding the theme choices available for 2.1.x fairly slim. A couple of them are ok, but none of them are really perfect for us. So I'm hoping you can help us with other options.

Is there any other place to find themes for 2.1.3, besides the Themes site (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=themes) ?

If we choose a theme that's only compatible with 2.0.x, will we have to deal with "test failed" items for every mod we try to install? Or could we consider themes for 2.0.x without making a lot more work for ourselves?

Or would we only find out by trying it?

Also, I see the highest compatible version for the Core theme is 2.0.x.  Is it being retired, or will Core eventually be updated to 2.1.x ?

Thanks for your help  :D

SMF 2.0.x Themes are not compatible with 2.1.x

No definitive answer to this. It could still be updated in the future.

Oh, so themes for 2.0 are not compatible at all with 2.1.3?  I did not realize that. I was hoping they might be partly compatible.

Diego Andres, I used your theme Aqua Style in my forum a few years ago.  I love it!

Shades. I will check our your site.

Thank you both very much!

Yes, that is correct. The same goes for almost all of the mods as well btw.

Check out @Diego Andrés' theme called 'NameX'.

I think everyone has given you the answer you are looking for.

However, you have me curious, what kind of theme are you looking for? Any specific colors,style, etc?

Edit : I forgot to mention that some of Crips old themes are being updated by Skhilled over at  - https://www.jpr62.com/theme/index.php?board=73.0 .

Thanks and You are welcome but there are still some great 2.1.3 themes on this site and as @TwitchisMental asked:

Edit: And I said that out of total respect to all my mentors here at SMF! Still learning but thanks to all the Themers here and lots of great themes in my opinion!

Oh gosh. I forgot to mark this solved.  But while I was away, there have been some more helpful comments posted.  So not such a bad mistake this time  :o .

Yes, that is one option I'm looking at!

I just really love Diego Andrés' Aqua Style. The way the colors, or maybe more the shades of the color, they make the page look nice and balanced, and they make the viewer's eye focus on the important parts of the page.  It helps make navigation easier. And in the topics, I like the extended profile next to each message.  But it looks like it's not...well, at least so far, has not been upgraded from 2.0. (It's why I posted this topic, I was hoping there might be a way to use it, despite the wrong version.)

If anyone remembers a theme from....geez, it must be 10 to 15 years or more ago.  It was called Balanced.  That's my all time favorite!  It was even better than Aqua Style, as far as the use of colors or shades of color. It's default colors were maroon, tan, and gray....and I think it might have had some gold highlights. It's almost like you didn't even have to try to read it.  It's like your eyes always fell on exactly what you needed to read.

But some of the current themes are pretty close for us.  Radiohead is close, but we don't have a use for all the buttons and menus that go in the white areas at the top. So it would just be empty white space. We like Flatline too, but I could not find a setting to fill the whole width of the screen. Jane2 is also close, but I'm just not a fan of the secondary teal color.

We like NameX enough to make it a choice for our members - especially because of the multicolor options. But it's the bar in this image - to me, with the admin breadcrumbs, it seems redundant and a bit confusing, or I'd probably use NameX for our default. I don't mind that breadcrumbs for regular users' view.  It seems to work fine there.  But for the admin view it somehow does not work as well.

You cannot view this attachment.

So for now, we will probably keep the SMF default Curve2 as our default.

I will definitely check out Crips' old themes being updated at the link you gave.  Thanks for the tip!

Shades. I like the Green Shades theme on your site even better than the Gander Green that's on the SMF Theme site.  If Green Shades came as one of a multi-color set, I would snatch it up in a flash!  But oh my gosh, it must be a lot of work to create a theme.  I know so little about that kind of coding, I can't imagine how much work it would be!

Anyway, sorry it took me so long to respond to all your comments. Thank you very much. And I will not forget to mark it solved this time.  ;D

Should also check Repulse theme, the light mode could appeal to you if you liked Aqua.

A bit late of a reply, but just so you know, you would need to make a small edit in the index.css

Find :
/* Set maximum width limit for content */
#top_section .inner_wrap, #wrapper, #header, #footer .inner_wrap {
    max-width: 1200px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    width: 90%;
}

Replace :

/* Set maximum width limit for content */
#top_section .inner_wrap, #wrapper, #header, #footer .inner_wrap {
    max-width: 100%;
    margin: 0 auto;
    width: 100%;
}

Glad to see that you have found a solution for now though.

brynn

Thanks for the info, Diego and Twitch.  I will try both!

And now keeping my promise to mark solved  :D

Edit
Oh yes, I do like Repulse!  For some reason, I never saw the light mode. That will be perfect!
