Made a quick SMF about 5 months ago.  It was open for a week and then went into maintenance mode as I didn't need anyone logging in.

It's been re-opened, and I had a few folks tell me their accounts wouldn't be recognized, and they couldn't use their emails again to re-send a password.

I checked the members table and didn't see duplicates where these two folks re-registered.

Either:

1. there is a setting I've overlooked; or
2. they never registered the first time and just though they did?

There isn't a setting in 2.0 that will remove/disable inactive accounts.

Yeah. And if they had an existing account it would show in members when they registered again, no?

Would it say there was a duplicate email?

I'm thinking they weren't registered at all.

Sir Osis of Liver

Registration will not work for a duplicate email or username, even if it hasn't been activated.

If you haven't setup some mod to do that, I'd assume these users might just have forgotten what email they used to register in the first place. Have seen that before.
