How to upload images directly to the editor. While preparing content like WordPress, I want to upload the image directly to my own server address. Users can upload the image directly. This is a big deficiency for SMF. How can I do this?

Images are uploaded as attachments and then included inline in the editor where you've want them displayed.

That's the way it works

I'm just curious.
Why is it not possible in SMF to upload photos directly in the message editor, e.g. in a place where you can provide a link to an external image, but it must be done in the form of an attachment?

In my opinion, this is one of the biggest flaws of forums. When writing a message/guide, you cannot include photos between paragraphs, they must always be at the bottom as an attachment. At the same time, you can easily do something like this by sending photos, e.g. to imgur and posting a link. Couldn't this be changed somehow, e.g. in SMF 3.0?

Use 'img' tags??? If inserted manually.

or choose "Insert an image' from the toolbar (Just to the right of the youtube icon)

On our forum, we used to rename *.jpg files to *.zip and attach them. Is that what you are looking for?
But yes they will be at the bottom of the post.

I re-read your post and edited this one....
Or do you mean upload the images directly to the forum, (having the forum host the image)??

My forum now uses the postimage mod.

This is a big deficiency. The SMF user can upload a picture to another place and get the url and add it to the site, but why should an ordinary user bother with this? Uploading the picture somewhere, getting the url from there and adding it to the forum is a ridiculous and long job. Like other platforms, there should be a feature to upload pictures directly in the editor. VBulletin MyBB xenforo etc all have this, why doesn't smf do this? It should be possible to upload it directly to my official server and use it inline without hassle.

An example in the picture is to upload content images and content images to my own server from the editor and put them in the content area. How can we do this?

You mean like this?

You cannot view this attachment.

Just click on the insert button.

Yes, it is currently 2 steps: upload + insert.  Drag & drop is supported for the upload step.  But the insert step remains separate.

Why can't I do it? The picture I added appears in the attachment section. I want it to remain in the middle like you sent, but I can't do it.

Have you tried the little blue arrow?

I didn't know about that either. I learned something new today. Thanks.  ;D

If people aren't getting it, that means the current UI is sub-optimal.

The editor seems very simple and inadequate. A lot of people don't know that's what the little blue arrow is for

You can then do on your forum, as I have done on mine.
I made a posting there, with instructions on how to use it:

Instructions:
1. place caret where you want the image to be inserted.
2. attach an image (*.png, *.gif, or other allowed formats).
3. click on the blue arrow next to the red "X".
4. enter height and width.
5. press insert.

Antechinus

You don't need to enter height and width. You can just click twice and the image will be inserted anyway. In that case the height and width are automatically handled by the theme's CSS.

But, this is another thing a lot of people may not realise, so they may be constantly thinking that entering height and width is just another hassle they don't want.

Anyway, as I pointed out in another thread, the current setup is bad for a11y, and SMF has traditionally prided itself on not being bad for a11y. I might tweak it up, just for the hell of it (I don't currently run a live 2.1 site).

The SMF 2.1 Simple Insert Image mod changes the default 'Insert' action so that an image is automatically inserted inline in a message with a single click (ie, the user is not given the option to specify the image width/height) and images are inserted using the forum's maximum width/height values as configured in 'Attachment Settings'.

Note: User's can choose to be given the option to specify the image width/height by enabling the 'Insert images posted inline using custom width/height values' setting in the 'Inline Images' area of the 'Look and Layout' section of their profile.
