Could be related to the issue here

as it started around the same time

I've got a bunch of users whose avatars are not displaying.  When opening the image in their own tab/window you just get a "not found" message for the image.  These users did not remove their avatars themselves.

They do *not* appear to be the same users who are having the logged-in-as-the-wrong person issue, but both errors appeared at the same time.

has your host done some changes recently? did they move your forum to another server? sounds like some files are missing.

Are these custom avatars, uploaded by the user?

Have you checked the custom avatar folder setting in SMF?  Is it set correctly?

Have you checked the folder contents in the file system via cPanel?  Are the files there?  Does the folder match what is set in Avatar Settings?

Have you tried uploading a new custom avatar?  Does it work?

I.e., double check the folders are properly aligned.  And you can see if the file is in the folder in the file system pretty easily via cPanel.

Back in October yes, but this problem just started within the last week or so

Yes

Yes it's good, and this isn't happening to all avatars, just some of them.

There are files there, but I have not done a file-by-file comparison. The folder does match the settings.

Yes it worked for me.

Yeah, all the settings look correct, plus we're not seeing it for all avatars, just some of them.

I would try to hunt down a specific avatar file in question to see if it's in the file system.  The avatars follow a naming convention avatar_###_blahblah.ext where the ### is the user ID.  So find the file for that user ID - it's kinda easy.

Pick a few (not just one) missing avatars.  If you can find the file, and it really exists, I suspect that this is just another example of your other issue, where user X was being confused with user Y.  It may be looking for the wrong file altogether.

If the file is truly missing, I don't know what to tell you.  It's gone somehow.

The only other theory I have is that if the affected users are only the very oldest users, so the avatars are actually attachments, and there is an issue with your attachment folders.

So it may help to similarly audit your attachment folders, compare the settings to the file system.  And confirm/deny these are only VERY OLD avatars, like the very first ones ever.

Only theories I have.  Good luck getting your host to open up & admit something.   It really feels like the host did something drastic with caching, folders, redirects, proxies, etc...  Something...

It looks like pretty much all the avatars are there but it doesn't look like they're 'connected' to the right accounts.

So now I need the next steps :)

Is there a way that *I* can do that for the users so they don't have to?  Or is this something I need to provide some specific steps to them to fix?

Either way, I'm not going to push that info out until I have some sort of resolution for the logged-in-as-the-wrong-user problem I'm working on now.

I suspect they're related.  I'd resolve the wrong-user problem first.

I'm literally on the phone with the hosting provider right now (yay hold button music!)  8)
