After the update
Email notifications have stopped coming, but notifications are coming in alerts.
In my settings, it is specified that notifications come by email and it is specified that notifications do not come in alerts.

Thanks for the update! I also updated to 2.1.6. SMF team has done a great job for many years. Really appreciate their work!

Tried updating PHP today from 7.4 but went straight to 8.4 as nothing below that would work anyway

SMF 2.1 works fine with all PHP 8.x versions. If you can't get it to work with anything lower than 8.4 I would recommend either contacting your host or posting in the support forum (it will work fine with 8.4 but there's always a chance that a mod might not work with that version of PHP)
