disable post count/ member status not locked to post count

I dunno how the rest of you feels about this.
I run two medium sized boards and I find this quite annoying that people get so high on their post count... look at me I already got 6473 posts...

I'd be more than glad if displaying of it was optional and if the member groups jr member, sr member etc could optionally be link on the time of membership rather than the activity on the board...

(I hate it when new people are a YABB GOD in 3 days and bug me to become admin)

You can already easily remove the post count in the templates, and you should be able to set all of your membergroups to not be post-based.

never saw anything.. I am not to good when it comes to coding...

well I know I can edit member groups... I just thought it might be handy to have an option build in...

I know what you mean, but it helps to maybe have posted somewhere YOUR criteria for becoming a mod or an admin-----that it isn't based on who posts the most.   Of course if that IS what you want to base it on, that's cool.  But if it's not, (like it isn't at my place) you just post that.  I also have an unwritten rule that if you ask, you are not going to get.

I have a friend that one woman bugged him night and day to be an admin.  When he told her there was no way in hell he was ever going to make her an admin, she resigned her modship and hardly ever posts anymore.   

I think you just have to be firm with people about it.

Have you tried a temporary suspension for excessive spam?  Something that we did at our place when some of the teens got out of control spamming was to post a thread that if they did anymore of that crap we would REDUCE their post count by 10 for every 1 unacceptable spam posts they made.

Believe you me, it stopped it.  And was a lot easier to just go in and reduce their post counts.  One guy didn't have any posts left after a couple of days.   It did stop the problem though, and no one got pissed off and left either.

I had that crap happen at my board and removed the post count display from messages to get rid of the spam

about the member group thing, I know that it can be modified to not work with post count

both things, we're talking about SMF, not YaBB SE, well, you can in the latter, but it's harder

that's a good idea, but it does take more work, I guess I was just lazy and was already very fed up of the post race some had (-_-)

I was so tired, that after the complaints from some members, I ended up closing the forum (=_=;)... I'll put it back online when I upgrade to SMF though

Well, it was only alot of trouble for one weekend.  Now granted for that weekend the other admin and I did most of nothing but reduce post counts, but come Monday they had straightened up.

With SMF, you could ban them with a "no post" ban for something like 2 days so they could think about what they've done .  It would handle it all .

SMF has a more powerful template system than YaBB SE.  You can change things much more easily in SMF.

i would definitely like to have that mod (admin must approve posts), with the option of making up to the whole forum that way.

That would be handy indeed.  You could do that to a member rather than banning them just make them have to have clearance to post until they prove they are trustworthy again.    I don't have much problem with that but I do have one member that it would come in handy for.

the mods/admin choosing should be based on whos active the most on your forums and whos eben there for awhile. and soembody you can trust.

I could not agree with you more.  That is how we do it.  You have to have been around for a while or be someone we know very well.
