Hi, does anyone know of an objective, or third-party site that compares phpBB with SMF? (I mean one not owned or sponsored by phpBB or SMF). I'm trying to make a decision. Have to admit, I'm leaning toward SMF, but I want to be sure...

Go with SMF you'll love it, the users here are very helpful too.

I had a list like this several months ago and it helped me choose SMF. I don't have that list anymore, but maybe it will help if I told you I recently converted my last phpBB board to SMF. Myself and members of my boards have found SMF to be much better than phpBB in terms of features and layout.

I'm afraid I don't know of any, myself, but if you do find any I think many would appreciate it if you posted here about it.

Oldiesmann

I'll try to throw one together for you tomorrow. SMF does have a lot more features than phpBB though.

an objective, or third-party site

I'm afraid you may not qualify Oldiesmann, just like I mayn't.

Since I run a test board for each of the following forums and own vBulletin in additon to a charter membership with SMF and used to run a phpBB board for over a year, if people provided a list of features that they wanted to have compared, I would be more than willing to compare the following forums (listed alphabetically) for those applicable features to each other:

IPB
phpBB
punBB
Simple Board (only part of MOS so might not be of interest to most)
SMF
vBulletin

I could even add in FlashBB and MXProjects if wanted since I also have both of those.  I may not be considered a non-partial 3rd party as I do run an active SMF forum that is my forum preference, but I have tested multiple forums and have a basic understanding on what components they all have.  Doing this would also benefit me to learn more about each of the forums further :)

Just to be helpful to someone that needs comparision : http://www.forummatrix.org/ , altough it doesn't include 1.1 RC2  :-\

Cool Surfer

SMF is way better than phpbb2 forums.

I switched from phpbb and so did a couple of friends.

I have found that it is much easier to install new themes in SMF, and easier to create and edit them - less files to change. Permissions are more flexible, you can organize boards better.

Is the OP still around? I just so happen to have an article on this in my site.

I don't consider myself a "fanboy" of any forum software, so hopefully it's fair and balanced.

Slightly OT, why is this a "Feature Request"?
All my mods found at TripStir.com/forum/.

You're right, I'll move it to General Discussion and Feedback, I think it's the best place for this one.

Hi

I'm kinda new to website stuff xoxota and i wont compare PHPBB & SMF for you.

All i know is SMF is superb to use and admin, its looks fab and works very smoothly.  The Modules & Themes are easy to install, the support on these forums is literally "Endless"  ;D  The upgrade facility is the BEST yet.

I used PHPNuke for 2 years and after numerous hacks and lost information, i went for SMF and haven't looked back since :)

Enjoy

Hi,

I moved 3 PHPBB forums to SMF 1.1 RC2, including a very big forum, and I am so pleased I did. It is superior in every department, including security, an ongoing issue with PHPBB.

The only thing I am aware of is that SMF seems to be stuck at this release for a very long time. Just hoping that it will get into high gear soon and roll out lots of new features to stay ahead  :D

I would disagree - one of the reasons I migrated from phpBB was the promise of the module system but it doesn't work for me at all. All I get is either parse errors or the mod never takes effect.

I also disagree with this - I've tried to get support on the above issue for months but nobody can help.

Apart from that SMF is a much better forum system than phpBB. The admin side of things is much more powerful, and the whole thing runs way faster.

Lazybones

Moved our forum from phpBB to SMF because to obtain the same functions that SMF has by default you have to literally install about 15 to 20 3rd party mods. Installing these mods in phpBB breaks the skin system and makes security updates next to impossible to implement at times.

The ONLY feature I mess that WAS a standard feature was that users could add them selves to specific groups on their own with the phpBB permissions system. There is a mod to do this in SMF but I am waiting until SMF 1.1 Final before applying any mods.
