Moved to Mod Requests as this popular but unlikely to be in a vanilla install anytime soon

You people are so lazy. Whats wrong with creating a post with a bump message :P
What is vanilla install ? :P

JayBachatero

It's a fresh install of any software.  No modifications or anything like it.

I run an role playing forum on ProBoards, which has a bump feature available to admins and mods, and I find it incredibly useful.  In our case, there are some times when threads need to fall into a certain order and we use the bump feature to accomplish that. We're currently trying to move to an SMF board but the lack of bumping ability makes the process a bit more difficult that it would've been if we had it.

I agree that enerybody on the board shouldn't be able to access a bump button. Yes, that would be annoying.  But I think there are times when an admin or mod should have that ability to control the content on their site in that way. Sure you can sticky something, but if you have a lot of stickys, a post can still get lost in the shuffle.

actualy i know an ipb forum that uses this. it has an hourly limit (its a trading forum) where only the auther can bump it once every hour im sure we could impement many options of who can bump what posts  and how often etc.

this would be a great mod i would use it even.

p.s

BUMP!

BUMPING UP BUMP Button function request thread  :D

Personally, I would like the 'bump' feature for admins/mods. It helps when I have a recent topics page that majority of the members use to browse the forums. Stickies don't stay on top of the recent topics page.

Why not just have it so that there is a small post (1 line) that simply says:

This topic was bumped by [user] [times] times, last time on [time]

And so if an admin or moderator sees misuse, *ban*

There could also be something like this when you click bump:

You are about to bump [topic]. Remember that you run the risk of getting banned if you misuse this feature. Are you sure you want to bump [topic]?
With an underscore. Because the one without an underscore's taken.

PLEASE CAN WE GET THIS!?!?!? It is a pain to bump information threads in an RP Community and have to bump it with a post. We like to keep things clean.

(I know this topic is old, but why make a new one if it is already there?)

The PHP Manual and the SMF Function Database should help you get started :)
