I think I'm going to want to make a new portal specifically for SMF. I love XOOPS, but there are things that I'd like to change, like compatibility issues with YSE and SMF, and also a problem with GIF images I recently found. If you have suggestions or want to help, please respond!

The things I do plan to include are a downloads section, a links section, a partners section, and a featured item section (where popular stuff is displayed, be it a partner, a download, or a news article). This'll be a big project, so . . . I'll need help! (Also looking for a graphics artist, I can't do *&!*!! with graphics.)

why not join up with pfabb/enigma

That's probably what I'll do. It's easier, and PfaBB is cool (though I've never tried it, I'm actually in the process of uploading it to the Ballitix web site, so...)

Thanks, Spiffy.

can you make a portal where the admin can upload content (downloadable files and pictures) via FTP instead of using the interface?

Thats the one thing that bugs me about most portals :'(

IMHO, this should be too difficult.  Take what ever php portal you like and create a component that reads the contents of the directory you're uploading too and then outputs the list to the screen as a set of links.  You might even be able to do this completely within a single php enabled page in PfaBB/Enigma

Part of the point of portals is so that you don't have to use FTP to upload new content, and can instead just type it in a comfortable admin UI on the site.

If you ask me, it is easier to just upload the files instead of having to upload them, THEN enter the URL of it.

Admittedly, I'm not real experienced with portal software like phpNuke, Xoops, and PfaBB/Enigma. But it seems to me you ought to be able to just "Upload" images and files as easily as you can attach a file from YaBB SE's/SMF's posting screen, and those files should be automatically placed in the appropriate folders, rather than having to FTP them or specify a URL.  :-\

I'm sure there are modules for XOOPS and E-XOOPS that can handle this. Or perhaps you can request the module at XMTD.

Brian and I have the exact same opinions when it comes to portals/CMS' ;)

I'm using PfaBB for a while now and very happy with the stability and the extra possibilities it is giving. Now, with it's successor Enigma coming this way, I'm sure going to stick with SMF&Enigma.

Anyone experience with differences between the different portals? I'm only used to PfaBB, but curious to other people's experiences.

Sure... but if you wait just a couple of weeks more, you can make mods for Enigma   ;)
