The installer path is wrong.

It probably be something like /home/something/htdocs/smf and should definitely not include ftp://

Where do people find out what theirs is? I've looked all over the ftp client but no joy there.

if you are on Godaddy do not use Localhost. Check with support. Just a shot in the dark fro my experience.

If you are not sure ask your host what your relative path is from your ftp login to your web root. then just add the path to your SMF folder and it should work
on cpanel websites you just need public_html/path/to/forum
on others it may be similar or whatnot depending on the setup.

ok tried contacting host and they are utterly useless - I will keep emailing them until they do better...

in the meantime all other help will be appreciated
