News fader does not work on safari 3.x

The news fader does not function on safari 3.x Mac, using the Kelto-LT theme, but does work on Firefox 3 Mac. The Safari web inspector reports the following errors:
TypeError: Null value

TypeError: Undefined value
http://theperson10.hnation.org/SMF/Themes/default/fader.js [nofollow] (line 25)

The problem also occurs when using "SMF Default Theme - Core", with somewhat different line numbers:
TypeError: Null value
http://theperson10.hnation.org/SMF/index.php [nofollow] (line 180)
TypeError: Undefined value
http://theperson10.hnation.org/SMF/Themes/default/fader.js [nofollow] (line 25)

Any guesses as to the cause of the problem? Patches / fixes?
