Default Membergroup

Am curious if this mod works on 2.0.7.
I installed it, and determined the ID of the default membergroup to be 10.  But when a new user registers and logs in, their membergroup is not set.

The primary objective of using this is that newly registered users are restricted to an introductory forum.  Once they post in there, and a moderator approves them, they are then assigned "regular" permissions to see and post to the other forums.

Is there any way to mod this even further so that I can automatically place people in a paid subscription group? 
 
Thought behind this is that they can register and automatically go into a "trial member" pool, and when that expires in 3 weeks they either have to subscribe or have no access.

The trail member part you can do with this mod no probably. The issue would be expiring within three weeks would require a custom script to check.
