Move post from any position after #2 to position #2 in topic

Previous topic - Next topic

Hi!

As moderator, I'd like to insert a standard reply in position #2 of each topic.

When I hit "reply" to a current topic with more than just the first topic (the starter topic), this "standard reply" that I want in position 2 may end up as reply #7 - and it is not in position 2.  Is there a way to do the actual reply and then to simply move it to position no 2, right after the original topic starter?

Thanks!

Harry

Not a feature I know about. Perhaps, a Mod Requests? Can this be moved? :)

Thanks N3rve!

I thought it may be something that like that in the end but I had to try...

Thanks for asking a moderator to move it! :)

I was actually asking if I should move it :P
I'll go ahead and do so ;)

There's actually two things here.

1. Would you want the standard reply inserted automatically?

2. How do you dictate that a reply should be the standard reply?

If 1. is not being done, the quickest and cleanest solution is to modify the timestamp of the standard reply to 1 second after the opening post.

hehe, N3rve - sorry! :-[

Hi Arantor!

Allow me to explain why I want this before answering your questions.

I want guests to browse my forum and to read the first post in each topic - but nothing beyond that.  I was given code by akabugeyes to do that (here:  http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=178736.0 and my request here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=193896.0).

Although his code does what I asked, absolutely nothing indicates to a guest reading the post that the post has been responded to.  A guest may even think that my forum is dead because a question is not attended to by answers...  Members see everythingm but guests only see the first post.

So, I thought that I have to have something to indicate that the topic (first post) has been responded to, if it has actually been responded to.

In the code akabugeyes supplied, I then noticed that by replacing a 1 with a 2 (you'll see what I mean when looking at the last line of code), his code shows the first 2 posts - not just the first, and I started wondering if I could have a standard second post be inserted as post #2 as soon as an actual reply has been made to the first post.  This inserted post should say something like "Sorry, even though there are replies to this topic, you have to register as a member to read it.".

For obvious reasons, I do not want this second post to appear before any actual reply has been made.  Then, by changing akabugeyes' code (the 1 changed to a 2) slightly and having the "warning #2 post" displayed with the first post, I am hoping to trigger more signups to my forum.

Now to answer your questions (and you thought I'd forget - hehe, just kidding.  I'm quite proud of myself for having remembered! :))

The answer to your first point is "Yes", that would be nice.   Taking everything I said into account, if whatever you have in mind would only work on new posts, then doing it manually for older posts will become an issue.  If you were thinking of creating a mod where I'd tick something somewhere that will indicate which boards will have the "standard second post" inserted to all the topics in that board, that would be nice.  Nice is too shallow a word - that would be GREAT!

Your second question may have been partially answered above.  If I have akabugeyes' code running, then every topic in every board will always only display the number I choose it to display to guests (2 for now - the actual first post and my "warning to guests).  Also, answering your question otherwise, it will always read the same.

I just realised:  Members will always see this second post unless it is built in such a way as to again NOT SHOW when a member reads a topic...  Ag, I'll use words in the second standard post that won't annoy guests :)

Your statement at the end makes sense, but I do not know what to do with it...  Do I have to modify the timestamp?  Are you actually saying that you already have an idea as to how to automatically insert a standard reply when the (first) topic is posted, but that some timestamp is the key to success?

Eish - I should have listened to a friend and studied software development - or whatever this coding thing is called... :(

Thanks for helping Arantor!

It seems like you want to do more of what you specified here than what you originally wanted to achieve...am I right? Either way, I would be willing to develop this if no one else already made plans for it.

Hi tyty123

Yep, the one where a simple warning is automatically inserted into post 1 when reply 1 is made seems to be a cleaner solution.

Thanks!
