I wouldn't be against adding an option for "Enable additional UBB tags", which would turn them on. That seems like a good compromise to me. It can be off by default and the help can say "enabling this will make your page non-XHTML compliant".

That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

I will second that. Make them additional tags and have that warning.

Am I the only one here who actually finds non-standard html tags useful? I love the CSS filters and the <marquee> tag... :)

My users love these tags. I also agree that there should be an option for each user to activate/deactivate the tags when they want too.

On a side note, is there any way to have the marquee tag move from left to right?

Oldiesmann

Yep.

In Sources/Subs.php

Find:
// Moving text.....
'<marquee>$1</marquee>',

Replace
// Moving text.....
'<marquee direction="right">$1</marquee>',

I think that you should get rid of all three.  More things that are just not needed.

Hey!
I jsut voted, and it seems that with my vote the "Remove all 3" option reached 50%. That's (almost) absolute majority.
So, I guess it would be time to proceed with the removal.  ;D

But really. I never saw anyone using it. I tried the glow once, because I was bored and they were there. Didn't worked ... dumped them.
I think those who are foruming (=browsing forums) since some time, will definitely not miss them.
  And new people will not miss them, because they will not know they exist.  :P

   we could put the new [html ] code in their place, or whatever new is in the SMF 1.1. Am i not right, [Unknown]? ;)

Ive only used move once and that was for fun, they cause distraction from main points of posts, so I agree to removing all three.

We already added the "Disable BBC" option in the admin centre for people who want to switch it off. I'm not against making that option by default contain 'glow,shadow,move', but I wouldn't want to force people already using SMF to lose the option.

Plus, html tag is obviously admin only - otherwise the world would explode...
I'm only a half geek really...

IMO, they should be just left.

If anyone wants to remove them from their own boards it's easy enough to do by replacing the buttons with a 1x1 blank gif file.  That's what I do when there's a button for a feature I don't want used on a specific board.

  I really don't see why would one keep something that no one uses. Really. I think that the 30% who voted to keep them, they did only because they are used to see there, these buttons don't disturb them.
  I am not talking about taking out from the templates or something. I would like to see disappearing for good, from the core itself. It is just something in plus.
   PLUS. I hear from the developers to feature requests replies like: this is not requested by a lot of people so it should be a mod, and not a default feature. And they are not willing to work on it. For things that a lot of people are asking and are more useful.
   Well, here we are, talking about something that is useless and absolutely not wanted by 70 % of the people (and not used by the other 30%!!), and yet we are debating wether to keep it or not. I find it illogical. Just take that out, and anyone who still wants can make them as a mod!!!
   PLUS. Hopefully the 'good' browsers gain more and more popularity in the future, and the IE will just die.

And Grudge, thanks for the tip on the disabling the codes. Though that's not really a good solution. It wastes extra memory, calculations or something. No matter how insignificant it can be, it's still a waste, (having something and then disabling it).

So I really see no reason to keep them.

You have a point there.  I take it back; keep them :).

This is my first post on this forum, but I am going to jump in with both feet.  I have been running a forum with a mix of both serious and humorous topics for a couple of months now.  The move, glow, and shadow buttons are actually used quite a bit in the humorous topics.  Everyone seems to enjoy them.  They are constantly finding new ways to combine the different effects for some really funny posts.

As long as it is possible for the Admin to disable them if they wish, my vote is to keep them all in.  Not everyone is serious all the time.  The SMF software is really amazing in what it can do... so why take away all the features that make it unique.  Please keep them.
