OMG what is the deal with this MOD? i think im just an idiot! I dont see anyone else with as many problems as I! but i really want the darn thing!

now its making my server have an internal error! GGRRRRR! What now? Someone want to tell me how to enter my codes i am using here so you can tell me what im doing wrong? i dont know how to make the code boxes!  :(

TrueSatan

You seem to be mixing several different issues...let's get you back on the right track...do the following:

You need to go to ACP>Server Settings and set your forum language to English and not English utf8 and to ACP>Features and Options>Basic Settings and uncheck Enable user-selectable language support.

You need to go to ACP>Packages>Options>Installation Options and set the fields according to your hosting details then on the same page go to Cleanup Permissions and select All files Writeable and run the cleanup...check via ftp that CHMOD of all your files is now 777 or 775 according to the peculiarities of your hosting and if not recheck the settings you made in Installation Options and run the cleanup again...continue as needed until you get the right settings.

The mod works properly...I've tested it and found that to be so.

Ok. I have fixed the permissions- now what? Im a tad confused (what else is new).  I have taken some screenshots to better show what is going on here.

If i use ftp to upload the package, and place it in the packages folder, this is what i get.

If i go here:
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc29/PerpetualLove/smf/uploadpackage.png

and try to upload the file from my comp, this is what i get:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc29/PerpetualLove/smf/internalerror.png

(this is the first time it gave me this- before i started doing SS it was saying to check file permissions)

I still dont know where that emulate whatever goes....  :(

TrueSatan

Let's pick our way through this...firstly there should be no need to ftp the mod into place and when you do it displays as per the first image you showed because it is not compatible with the version of SMF you are using unless you use version emulate to put it in place...being non compatible it will not show a link for you to be able to apply the mod.

You should be able to use the package manager to add the mod and version emulate to bypass the non compatibility...however I suspect that the error you are getting may point to a mod security issue that is down to your host...please see the following link:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=34270.0

perpetuallove

ok i added that file from the link you gave me. Now what? You still havent exactly specified where to put this emulate? There are several ways to install a package- so where does it go?

do i upload it thru SMF, where it says to browse - like from my computer? and then add the emulate? Or do i browse servers to do this? If i browse servers it doesnt give me a link to download the mod. See?

and now i try doing it again by uploading from my computer and it says

"Could not upload package, please check directory permissions!"

Actually there is a good reason why I didn't provide an updated mod...having been told not to do so by SMF staff has a lot to do with it!

The author of this mod is still active on SMF...last visited not that long ago...so he can update or not as he sees fit. If a developer has obviously abandoned a mod that is a different matter. The standard way to handle such things is to advise use of version emulate...it doesn't step on the toes of mod developers and still allows use of the mod.

Oh I see.. I didn't realize that.  My deepest apologies then.  When I went to the developer's site to check how this mod was working, I saw that the developer wasn't using SMF anymore and thought he/she had decided to no longer support this mod.  I am truly sorry.  I will take off that zip now.

ok well now im getting that 500 error again. Damn. SHoulda left well-enough alone. Just peaches..... :(

**modifying- its not giving me the error now..... ugh i dont get it!

TrueSatan

I rather think that you either have a problem due to your hosting or from the editing you've been doing...probably the best way to confirm that the mod can work for you is to try it on an entirely fresh test forum that hasn't had other work done on it.

Just to answer on point of yours actually I did say exactly how to use version emulate in a previous posting...

The way emulate version works is that you go to the SMF mods site and find the page for the mod you wish to use...or go to the first post in the support topic for it here where a link will be found. From that page you will find the last SMF version that the mod supports. This mod supports SMF 1.1.2 thus that is the last version in this instance. You would then add  &emulate_version=1.1.2 to the end of the package manager url in your forum. By this we mean use the ACP>Packages>Download browse to the package and then add the &emulate_version=1.1.2 to the URL prior to downloading the package into your forum.

I tested this with this mod to see that there were no issues that might derail it...none occured. If you follow those directions it should work for you unless your host has presented additional problems...BTW as I also stated previously make sure the language and CHMOD settings are correct...I gave details of how to do that in my previous posting.

I think this mod should be removed from the mod site, since the maker is not on SMF anymore, is not responding to any messages in this topic, and links to his website / preview are out-of-date or not working!
Updates are not likely to occur.

I really like the bears, but I still can't get it to work, and I'm not inclined to do all kinds of surgical procedures to get it installed.

TrueSatan

That would not be at all a sensible move for many reasons...

The mod author may have his own reasons for not having the time to do an update now but may be willing to do one given time

For most users it is extremely easy to get this mod to work on current SMF versions by simple use of version emulate and absolutely no "surgery"

If the mod author remains inactive for an extended period or wishes to hand the mod to another developer bringing it up to date would also be extremely easy and were it to be removed this possibility would be lost.

Leaving it in place allows the possibility that another developer might use the code as inspiration for another mod or a derivative mod of it.

I'm sure that there are other reasons I haven't listed...

I have only one question.
If I use emulate do I need to change XML file, to put 1.1.4 ??
Or I can install mod manually or via parser ??

Thank you.

TrueSatan

If you use version emulate then you need not edit the mod in any way whatever...it installs as normal once version emulate has allowed the incompatibility to be resolved. Consider version emulate as an easier alternative to editing the mod for compatibility. You have the alternative, to both the above methods, of using the Package Parser to output the mod details and then do a manual installation...three choices...pick whichever suits you best.

shumar

Thank you, TrueSatan, you are True Satan. ;)

TrueSatan

My pleasure...after all that I hope you like the mod.

I choose option 2. "Change modification.xml".
I like it. I even uninstall Simple_Mood 1.0. :)

I have a question.
Is there any chance to make this mod more dynamical.
To show pictures of mod bellow or after dropdown menu, and to change as choosing mood ??

Thank you.

TrueSatan

If you wish to code what you have in mind yourself you can do so but it does not appear that the mod developer is likely to do so for you at this time and I am having trouble understanding what you mean too. The moods can already be changed via each users profile...if you mean that you would like thumbnails of the images to be shown in the profile so as to make selection from the existing dropdown easier it could be done but it's not something I would be particularly interested in doing...maybe you could persuade somebody to do it or offer a payment for it to be done. With SMF 2.0 looming anyway it would seem to me rather wasteful to spend much time and effort on such recoding at this point.

shumar

Yup, you are right, as usual. ;)
I forgot to mention for thumbnails, but you was correct.

Thank you for time that you spend for reading and answering to my post.

P.S.
Is there any spoiler when non-charters can expect SMF2.0 ??

TrueSatan

My pleasure...

Re 2.0... Not really...you see it is in beta at the moment so the actual release date may well depend on what bugs are found and thus how much time and effort is needed to fix them prior to a release...thus there's no way to say save that if you wait long enough it will eventually come.

taurean

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

i use TP 0.98 Dana/ SMF 1.1.4. any help?
