I have not followed SMF development since 1.0RC2. I recently downloaded 1.1 final and took a quick glance at new features and the SSI file and APIs. Of course I like what I see, especially the use AJAX.

I'm a little disappointed with the development of the SSI.php/API. The includes seem the same as version 1.0RC2. I was kind of hoping for more diversity or creativity, such as including avatars, attachments, etc. For instance, I made a function on my own SSI to show the avatars of the top x members in regards to posts, last login time, etc. Or having the posters avatar display by each new topic. Some of these modifications are simple enough but otherwise challenging for the majority of users.

I'm a little surprised a topic rating system hasn't made it into the official package but I do see a mod for it.

I'm also surprised a clear cut option to remove a user avatar hasn't been included since 1.0. For ordinary users, there's no clear cut way for them to remove their avatar, such as a button that says "delete avatar."

I saw a mod called "Simple Blog." I haven't installed it yet, but I'm assuming it changes a persons profile page and adds a blog aesthetic to it. This is an excellent idea. It'd be cool if SMF incorporated this into future versions, I think it would really set them apart from other forum software if user profile pages had a blog/Myspace-esqe feel to them and could be easily accessed through www.yoursite.com/forum/username.

if you use $user_info you can get the users avatar with ssi.. It contains everything about the user..

I use $user_info on one of my pages to pull information like msn and some custom fields into a application.

a blog like system would make smf a cms instead of a forum.. So thats a real good reason it doesn't have it..

Not an authentic blog per se, simply displaying on their profile page the last x topics the user has started. But displaying them in a fashion that makes it look like a blog. That's what I meant.

started could be done simply by tweaking the mysql query smf does to get the latest topics...

Development on the SSI stuff has been a bit slow because of the development efforts with 1.1. Now that it is out of the way, there should hopefully be time for the developers to work on it again.
