where they're only allowed to post when an administrator (or a mod?) is online :)

could apply the length stuff to that too

what ya'll think?

And why would this be used by any kind of user with a sane mind? If you ban somebody, wouldn't you want them to be gone permanently? Like this, the banned person would either just stop coming to the forum (most likely and no different from a regular ban) or just keep on trying to get online to spam the board as much as possible whenever a mod gets on... either way, it has a negative effect...
Just let whoever's been banned sweat it out for a couple weeks and then see if he's cooled off by letting him on again... then the second (serious) offense means a site-ban w/ me...

Fizzy

That means that the admin would have to constantly monitor/check for new posts by banned members ? ? ?

you cant always make someone gone permanently ;)

you seem to think banned people cant reapply for membership?

its not hard, they get a new email address from hotmail, yahoo or aol, and sign up. if they're using AOL as their isp you can't tell who is who.

i have troublesome users that live in another time zone to me that know when I wake up and go to sleep.

at the moment i ban everytime find them on the site but a curfew ban or whatever like this might help.

I know that people can reapply after they change IP's. Still, it takes them time. After three or four tries they will stop trying. Once they realise they're not getting any response from the users because they're banned instantly and their posts are also removed instantly, they won't try again.
However, whenever I ban somebody from my site (the entire site) they never come back. It's probably because they think we've gone offline or something, but it works. If they come back anyway, they're still not causing enough trouble for me to notice them so the case is closed to me.

To me personally, a feature like this would be completely unnecessary, even as a mod.

I had to ban an entire ISP due to one member that wouldn't stop re-registering.  He's now attempting to use different ISP's.  There is no way to TOTALLY ban a member, but there are many ways to make it very difficult for them to access your forum.

it'd be probably better to tag the person with a cookie, then only people in using that computer are affected, not a whole IP range... still not the best solution but could evolve to something better combined with the other methods... dunno, never pondered too much about banning methods

yup there is that, but they still have to be aware of that.

you could always divert their attention and say "your ip is blocked because xxxxx"

burpee.. they dont even have to 'get a new ip' AOL users all pretty much look the same.
(mostly 198.x.x.x. and 205.188.x.x there are a few more and yes the x.x.x part doesnt change!)

banning them three or four times doesn't always work. the persistant ones won't give up.

i've had one guy i banned almost daily for months on end literally. i still get emails from him claiming to still be on the board (which i've ignored) containing the contents of posts which are in sections only people with over 500 posts can see..

what i started doing was stalling new signups for AOL users for up to 4/5 days at a time.

another trick is to use someone else they know to sign-up, and then post from their aol ip once its been authorised.

i've also just banned one guy who was using www.the-cloak.com to access my board since i'd already blocked his static ip.

maybe i just need a banning document. lol

Reading through the Terms of Service on www.the-cloak.com [nofollow] you will find "If you have been blocked by the owner of a bulletin board or other service that allows the posting of messages, you may not use this service to bypass this blocking." If you can figure out that someone is using this to re-visit you forum after they have been banned, I would suggest getting in contact with the cloak people to see if they can help you out.

BTW - I am amazed that you have someone that is that persistant. I've never seen anyone that bad about it.

If the idiot is definitely using an AOL Ip number have you tried reporting him to AOL ?

They're fast enough to throw complaints and threaten blacklisting at us, would they follow up on an abuse report from you ? Somehow I doubt it.  :-\

all aol users show up is the proxy they're using!

Fizzy

I know, but would AOL have a recorded log of the user accessing that proxy?
They'd be accessing it using their account number ID, right?

Can Grudge's (?) mod for pre-moderated posts be configured to work on a user-by-user basis or just globally, because I'd have thought that something like this might fit the bill here?

Brilliant mod  :)

well... there's was also an idea that was mentioned at some point, of creating a kind of invisibility ban, where the member would be able to post and read posts and everything as normal, but just for him, cause nobody else would see his posts or messages... it'd seem to be the best way to make him feel ignored and want to go away... muehehe >:D

:D What a fantastic 'out of the box' idea !
That would get my vote any day of the week.

Hahah I like that idea too! :D   Quarantine User, as if they're a virus! :P

So when a thread is going to display, first check all posting member ID's for the "quarantined user" ID.  If the thread viewer != quarantined user, then make the post hidden (or visible only to Mods, Global Mods and Admins).  I would also make the quarantined user's post background colour a bright yellow or something customizable to distinguish it.

Ride

I like this idea very much.  Anybody come up with a mod like this yet?
